Volunteers: Scoring
Over the past several years I have volunteered in several different positions at
the Northeast Florida Dressage Association shows and I have enjoyed them all.
There is a lot of comradery when setting up or taking down the rings, when you
are a runner you get to watch many tests and you get to talk to the riders, and if
you are a scribe you get a better understanding of how the judges think.
However, my favorite volunteer position is scorer. Scorer doesnt actually
describe the position at all since it doesnt involve actually giving scores (the
judge does that!); the scorer just adds up the scores on the test sheet and
converts the numbers to a percentage. Does that sound boring? Well, it really
isnt as long as you like numbers. There is something very satisfying about
taking a piece of paper with a bunch of individual numbers and converting
those into a percent so that all the riders in a category can then be placed and
receive appropriate ribbons. It really isnt a hard position you do get to use a
calculator with a tape! With every test that I score, I put myself in the place of
the actual rider. Would I want the person scoring my test to be very careful to
ensure that everything is done correctly? Of course I would! So I double check
everything! And, at the end of the day, I feel pretty good because I know I have
done my best. As an added bonus, I get to watch many of the tests. So, from my
viewpoint, being a scorer is a great way to volunteer.
