Review of Composite and Prime Numbers
Grade Level: 4
th
Grade

Standards Objective(s) Assessment
CCSS: Math 4.NBT.5
Multiply whole numbers
of up to four digits by one
digit whole numbers, and
multiply two digit
numbers, using
strategies based on place
value and the properties
of operation. Illustrate
and explain the
calculation by using
equations, rectangular
arrays, and/ or area
model.
1. The student will be
able (TSWBAT) to use
the standard algorithm to
multiply 3- and 4 digit
numbers by 1- digit
numbers

2. TSWABT to identify
prime and composite
numbers from 1-50.
1. Students will be able to
answer at least 2 out 3
questions correct on exit
slip.

2. In pairs, students will
play Prime Number Hunt
and teacher will review
game sheets once
students have completed
game to check for
understanding of prime
and composite numbers.
Materials and Resources:
Student Math textbook Exit slips copy 1 per student,
6.4 Flip Chart Prime Number Hunt (1per pair)
Markers 1 piece of paper per pair.

Lesson Introduction

1. Set classroom up by have exit slip and
markers already on the students desk, each
student (in table group) will need a different
color mark for activity.
2. The teacher will start by prompting students to
place name on paper already placed on their
desk and then pull out their math textbooks.
3. They will then instruct students to turn their
math books to lesson 6.4 on page 148. The
teacher will do a quick review the material
from lesson yesterday while checking for
students understanding of the material.
4. The teacher will then begin to teach lesson 6.4
using the 6.4 Flipchart (provided below).

Procedure

1. The teacher will go over the 6.4 Flipchart
allowing students to answer and work through
the problems (the teacher will make sure to

use both the old fashion and break apart
method when solving problems).
2. The teacher will prompt students throughout
the slide show and ask them questions such
as, where do I start, what is my next step, and
what do I do now?
3. After the concept is taught, the teacher will
assign partners and have students work
problems on page 148 # 3, 13-15. The teacher
will allow time for students work on those
problems and then go over them on the board.
4. Next, the teacher will do whole group work
with the class on problems 16-18 as a class
on page 150. The teacher will model these 3
problems on the Promethean board and allow
students to tell how they went around and
solve them (call for multiple students per
problem).
5. Once those problems are completed, the
teacher will tell students to pull out the exit slip
that was on their desk to begin with. Students
will then work on answering the 5 questions.
Students will be given 10 minutes to complete
the exit slip. (After 10 minutes are up group
leaders will collect exit slips and place them in
the classroom work bin).
Lesson Closure

1. The teacher will tell students that they are
working with the partner they were assigned
before.
2. The teacher will pass out the Prime Number
Hunt to the partners. Each group of partners
only needs 1 exit slip and 1 blank piece of
paper to keep score. Inform students to put
both of their names on the sheet
3. The teacher will allow students to work on
Prime Number Hunt for 30 minutes.
4. When time is up the teacher will have group
leaders collect the activity and place it in the
classroom work activity.
