-ED Ending Sounds

RATIONALE FOR THE LESSON:


Students are developing their reading and writing skills. Last week the students learned that the
!ing" ending alwa#s sa#s $ing$. This !ed" ending sound lesson will help students understand the
three separate sounds !ed" %an produ%e so that the# %an read and write with greater &luen%#.
O'T(O)ES$*OALS:

-akes in various words so that the# are a/le to de%ode words ending in !ed in their own reading
and writing.
ASSESS)ENT:
I will take notes on <!7 students during the parti%ipation ti-e on a %lip/oard to deter-ine their
understanding o& the di&&erent sounds the 2ed ending %an -ake. I will also %ir%ulate around the
roo- as the students are working in groups on their word sorts. taking notes on students= progress
in deter-ining the ending 2ed sound. I will %olle%t the %o-pleted word sort list &ro- ea%h student
at the end o& the lesson.

-ulti!level word sort during the pra%ti%e portion o& the lesson. 5ords on the sort list are &ro-
various reading levels so all students will have the opportunit# to read words that the# alread#
know and students reading at -ore advan%ed levels will /e a/le to read -ore %hallenging words
to the rest o& the group.

Students to %o-e to the rug and sit &a%ing the a%tive /oard.
Last week we talked a/out !ing" and how when #ou see !ing" at the end o& a word it
alwa#s -akes the $ing$" sound. Toda# we=re going to /e learning a/out the three
di&&erent sounds !ed" -ake when the# are at the end o& a word. It %ould sound like $ed$
or $d$ or even $t$. 0Aoint to the di&&erent sounds on the A%tive 9oard s%reen1
9# knowing the di&&erent sounds 2ed %an -ake it will help us when we=re stret%hing out
words in our reading and writing.
o 5hen we=re stret%hing out a word and we hear the $d$. $ed$. or $t$ sound at the end
we will know that it -ight end with 2ed
o 5hen we=re reading /ooks and we see that a word ends in 2ed we will know that
the word will end with the $d$. $ed$. or $t$ sound.

ends with 2ed #ou know that it %ould -ake the $d$. $ed$. or $t$ sounds.
