Title: Typography Scavenger Hunt and Glogster Poster
Subject: Intro to Graphics and Design
Grade Levels: 9-12 with no prior knowledge of subject matter Accommodations: I will differentiate instruction as needed to accommodate individual student needs including pairing or one-on-one instruction or other.
Objective: Demonstrate understanding of the Classifications of Typography by using personal technology to collect photographic examples of type and present them as a Glogster poster.
ISTE Nets for Students Standards 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats
Course Standards: ACCT-GDP-8: Students will continue to develop communication skills. ACCT-GDP-7: Students will explore different outlets for typography and define its role in design.
Materials: Computer in graphic arts lab Personal technology, ie smart phone, that has a camera feature
Activities: 1. Take Classifications of Type pretest individually. 2. View and explore Classifications of Type Powerpoint presentation. 3. Divide into small groups (no more than three). Go out at school or after school and take photographs of actual type examples that illustrate each classification of type. Each person must have one upper case and one lower case example. Choose best of group photos for next step. 4. Create an account on www.Glogster.com 5. In small groups, create a Glogster poster that includes: a. Names of each of the six classifications of type b. Brief description of each classification of type c. Photo examples of both upper case and lower case letter examples for each classification of type 6. Take Classifications of Type posttest individually.
Assessments: Pretest Posttest Glogster rubric
Evaluation: My past experience is that students have no pre-existing knowledge of the classifications of typography since it is specific to graphic design. Students will take the pretest, which will be graded. The pretest example I have included for this lesson contains six questions examples. In reality, there will be more questions.
Students will create a Glogster poster to demonstrate their formative knowledge of the classifications of type based on the Powerpoint presentation they will explore. A rubric will be used to assess the Glogster poster.
Students will take a posttest after completing the presentation and Glogster activities.
I will compare grades on the pre and posttests and use the data collected to make revisions to the lesson. I will look at overall grades on posttest to determine the overall effectiveness of the lesson and may make adjustments to the presentation itself or how it is presented. An example would be to present the presentation to the class as a group rather than or in addition to having the students explore it on their own. I will also look at individual answers about specific classifications of type to determine whether one class has been more easily learned. If, for example, many students miss questions on the post test that refer to the Roman classification of type, I will look at how that class is presented to see whether it can be improved upon.
I will survey the students to see what their impression of the lesson is and whether they felt it was effective and easy to learn. Students often make insightful observations about the success of a lesson. I will consider their opinions as well.
