Formal Proposal:

Topic:
Health and Fitness
Type of documentary:
MIXED: including observation footage, interviews, archive footage, a voiceover.
Style:
The documentary will be fairly formal, this is due to the use of facts/statistics combined with
the scientific themes of the documentary. We will also be using a voiceover providing an
authoritative tone which will contribute to the formality of the documentary.
Channel and Scheduling:
Channel 4 due to the audience of 16-45 year olds and mixed gender. Shown at 7.30-8pm.
This is a suitable time for our target audience as our questionnaire results show that this is
when they mostly watch television so we ensured it will be watched.
Target Audience:
Male and Female, 16+
Primary Research
The primary research that we will use for our documentary are:
We will conduct a questionnaire and create results so we can get our own facts and
figures about health and fitness
We will need to plan when we are going to interview the people we need as this is
most time consuming, so will have to get in touch with specialists, e.g. Nutritionists,
gym instructor, everyday people and arrange a time/place to meet which is suitable.
We will also need to ensure we have appropriate and relevant mise-en-scene of
which the interview will take place for example the interview of our gym instructor
could be shot in the gym.
We will need to plan for this to decide exactly where in the gym, which gym, if this is
able to happen.
We will need to decide what cutaways we will be using, this has been planned on our
brainstorm of content for our documentary. We will be using cutaways of people;
exercising, archive materials, people walking, fitness classes, healthy/unhealthy
foods and more to represent and make our health and fitness documentary flow.
Within our documentary we will be using Vox-pops to make it more entertaining and
professional, this means we will have to plan what Vox-pops are needed, how many
we will have and when we are going to use them within our documentary.

Secondary Research
The secondary research that we will use our documentary are:
Use the internet to define and find information about health and fitness.
We will be using archive materials such as videos and images. This will include a bit
about the history of fitness, images and stories of the extremes people will go to
keep fit along with images of the good that fitness has done for them. We will also
use archive footage of how different countries approach health and fitness.
We will also provide facts and statistics about existing health and fitness data, giving
correct information and knowledge.
We will also need to use existing music to put behind the visuals of the documentary
giving more entertainment to the audience.

Narrative:
We will using a non-linear narrative structure so the documentary will not be
chronologically ordered. Single stranded, so all themes displayed will be under the same
topic of health and fitness. Open narrative as this is an ongoing topic and some questions in
the documentary may not be conclusively answered in full.
Outline:
Beginning: We will be using a voice over to introduce our documentary to the audience, this
will help with understanding throughout the documentary. We will engage the audience by
identifying the themes portrayed in the documentary along with a visually interesting title
sequence of what our documentary is.
Middle/Exposition: Within the middle of the documentary we will be identifying the
different areas of health and fitness such as why people exercise, information from
specialists; nutritionist, doctors, dietician, class instructors, personal trainers.
Reconstructions, along with cutaways, interviews from gym instructors, gym members, non-
gym members who are fit and healthy plus facts and figures.
End: In the end of our documentary we will be using credits (graphics), voiceover
highlighting the key elements of exposition of the documentary.

Resources:
For the documentary we will need to use:
Video camera- videoing.
Tripod- allow the camera to be still and professional.
Microphone.
Track.
blue screen used for Mise-en-scene.
Jib-high angle shots.
Computers for use of premier and photo shop, internet.
