Please make time for your childs Teacher Conference.
This is a crucial year for your child and we all need to be working together for their
success.
Reading / English/ Writing (ELA)
Students are reading for comprehension and gathering information from text.
We are learning how to highlight and justify their answers from text.
Third graders are also expected to read various fiction and non-fiction text and be able
to write about what they read by sharing key points (summarize) or story elements from
fiction reading.
Writing We are practicing writing to a prompt using various leads in an introduction
and adjectives to describe and give more vivid details as they stretch sentences.
Capitalization and punctuation is a general expectation for all third graders.
English- Students are learning lots of grammar skills that are new to them.
So far we have covered; adjectives, nouns, verbs, singular, plural, types of sentences,
This week we are working on verb tenses, past, present , and future.
Math- Third graders are learning and practicing subtraction with multiple steps and 3
and 4 digit subtraction with regrouping. Word problems are not going away and they
need to get in the habit of highlighting the key information and set the problem up to
show work and solve.
Social Studies- Our unit of study that we are finishing up is S.C. Native Americans.
This week coming we will start on the S.C. Explorers and their motives for settling in S.C.
Science- We will be starting our Rocks and Minerals unit this week. Students will be
investigating, identifying and classifying rocks and minerals. As we study rocks and
minerals students will also learn how we use rocks everyday.
Nov. 11

we have a special guest coming to guide the kids through a hands on field
study of rocks by mining for rocks simulation and students will leave this visit with a bag
of rocks to keep and if they want to purchase their own gem necklace for extra $4.

The fee for this event is $9 per child to participate. An information letter will be going
home for your signature and request for fees to be turned in by Nov. 10
