Victoria's most restricted frog, the
Baw Baw frog is only found at high
altitudes on the Mount Baw Baw
Plateau in eastern Victoria.
Inhabiting a restricted and fragile
environment this frog is
threatened by development and
intense use of the Baw Baw
Plateau for recreational and
forestry activities. During summer, they
meet to breed in seepage sites along the edges
of gullies.

One of Victorias endangered frog is
called the philoria frosti also know

altitudes, Mt Baw Baw. Baw Baw
frogs meet up during summer to

There has been a 98% decline in Baw
Baw Frogs since the 1980s. The
reasons for this population crash are not
clear, however the two most likely
factors are:
Chytridiomycosis an infectious disease
caused by chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium
dendrobatidis) which infects the skin of
frogs and other amphibians. Chytrid fungus
has been linked with declines and
extinctions of frogs worldwide, and appears
to affect frogs in cool climates most
severely. Once a population is infected,
there is no effective way of controlling this
disease. Chytrid fungus has been detected in
some Baw Baw Frogs.
Climate change With climate change,
there are likely to be warmer temperatures
and decreased rainfall in the Baw Baw
Plateau region. This could cause sub-alpine
and montane habitats of the Baw Baw Frog
to shrink or entirely disappear.

There has been a 98% decline in Baw
Baw frogs since 1980s. No one really
knows why there has been such a
population drop but there is thought to
be two reasons.

Chytridiomycosis is an infectious
disease caused by some type of
fungus which only infects the skin of
Baw Baw Frogs and other Frogs. This
fungus has extinct other type of frogs
worldwide, it is know to effect frogs
that live in the colder climates. Once
some frogs are infected there is no
way of stoping it or controlling it. This
disease has been detected in some
baw baw frogs.

With climate change it is now likely the
temprture is going to get hotter and
decrease in rainfall in the Baw Baw
frog region.

Difference between
vanruble endanged
and threatened
http://animals.pawnatio
n.com/difference-
between-endangered-
threatened-vulnerable-
species-11408.html

Vulnerable
A species classified as vulnerable faces threats, like
loss of habitat and poaching, in the wild that may cause
it to go extinct. These species have come under threats
that have pushed them out of near threatened and into
the first of the IUCN's danger-zones: vulnerable. The
threat of extinction for vulnerable creatures, like the
African lion, remains higher than for species of least
concern while near threatened species are approaching
its status or kept stable via captive breeding programs.
In other words, near threatened species' problems have
intensified or continued so their population has
decreased to a worrisome level; they are now
vulnerable.
Endangered
Endangered species populations are in severe decline
and are at risk for extinctions based on several factors,
such as pollution, deforestation and hunting. One
notable example of this has been the bald eagle. Once
highly endangered in the 1980s and early 90s due to
DDT poisoning, conservation efforts have since
worked so the species is classified as least concern
today.

Vulnerable
When a species is classified as
vulnerable they face threats of losing
habit and poaching which may cause
them to go extinct in the wild. So
Vulnerable is when a species
population is gone to a low level.

Endangered
When species is endangered their
population is in serve decline and are
at risk of extinction from pollution
deforestation and hunting.

Threatened
The term "threatened" is not a category in itself but
an umbrella term the IUCN uses to encompass all
three of their levels of most concern: vulnerable,
endangered and critically endangered. Any species
that has entered these three categories is officially
described as a threatened species overall, and one of
the levels in particular. In order to become
threatened, a species must have been observed
decreasing in numbers over a period of time due to
loss of habitat, over-hunting, poaching and pollution.
The drop in population must be one that biologists
and environmentalists note as detrimental to the
species and which therefore places difficulties in its
path to regaining those numbers without outside help.
Zoos Victoria is working to change the fate of
threatened species and is committed to fighting
extinction we will ensure that no more Victorian
terrestrial vertebrate species become extinct.
As part of a long-term program to support the
conservation of this species, Zoos
Victoria collected a Baw Baw Frog egg mass in
late 2011. By developing captive-husbandry
techniques for breeding, raising and
keeping Baw Baw Frogs, we can help to rescue
this Endangered species.

Threatened

Threatened is when a species goes
through all 3 stages and there is not
many of them left. To become
threatened a species must be getting
smaller in numbers from pollution, loss
of habitat, over-hunting and poaching.

Zoos in victoria are trying to save
thretened species and is committed to
fightning extinction.The zoo collected a
Baaw Baw frog egg mass in 2011. And
are working to breed more Baw Baw
frogs to save them
