Dear 2 nd grade families, Welcome back to school! What an exciting time to be in 2 nd grade! We will be learning many new concepts this year and will see lots of new strategies to help us become mathematically proficient students as we implement the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. This overview will be coming with each new unit of study to let you know at home what we will be learning in school and how you can help support your child at home.
Essential Skills: Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s within 100 Place value of ones and tens Standard, word and expanded form of numbers Comparing 2 digit numbers Understanding odd vs. even
Unit Vocabulary : after before compare digits dime decreasing expanded form equation expression even equal greater than increasing longs/rods less than model more number number sentence numeral number line nickel order ones place odd place value penny quarter quantities represent standard form skip count sequence tens place Unit Summary : Students will work on reading and writing numbers within 100 in a variety of forms. Students will demonstrate an understanding of place value and the digits representing tens and ones. Students will be able to skip count up to 99 by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Finally, students will use their knowledge of the different forms of numbers and place value to compare 2 two-digit numbers using symbols (<, >, =).
Caesar Rodney School District 2014-2015
Activities to try at home :
Discuss examples of mathematics in everyday life: television listings, road signs, money, recipe measurements, time, and so on. Play Dominoes : Each player turns over a domino and finds the total number of dots. The player with the larger total then takes both dominoes from that round. Take inventories around the house and while shopping. Have your child keep track of each count using tally marks. Using the Fact Triangles or flash cards, practice addition and subtraction facts. Have your child tell you a number story that fits a given number model, such as 3 + 5 = 8. Go to your local library and check out the book 12 Ways to Get to 11 by Eve Merriam, an entertaining book that presents addition facts. Additional Resources :
