Lesson Plan: Preparing to Ride: Know Your Bike: Bike Basics
Learning outcomes are achieved if the learner can:
1. Identify and describe the safety characteristics of selected bike components 2. Describe the basic function of the gears and derailleur 3. Deflate and reinflate a tyre 4. Complete a puncture repair and inflate an inner tube 5. Undertake simple adjustments and repairs under supervision
Lesson Plan Bike Basics Introduction: This Module focuses upon developing learners understanding of the functional elements of the bicycle as whole, key components, their operation, care and basic maintenance. Activities are of a formative nature and seek to develop Learners Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes (KSA) for progression into subsequent modules.
The program is designed to scaffold learning while fitting in with the current curriculum and class time frames. Timeframes for teaching are delivered within the curriculum of a standard 45 minute lesson. Know Your Bike Factoid Quiz 45 minutes Learners have been introduced to all bike parts, Laminated flashcards each with a Bike Safe Bike Smart their basic function and a safety feature via Activity 1. This practical quiz may be undertaken in teams or as individuals. One Bike per team/individual placed in rows at end of netball court or similar. Learners participate in relays to attach labels to correct parts. Goal is to achieve mastery/100% correct. bike part function or safety feature. e.g. Teacher resource/preparation. Activity 4 (45 minutes) Online / F2F Tyres, Punctures & Repairs Puncture Repair relay race. 45 minutes Watch videos that highlights how to repair a puncture; or Teacher or local Subject Matter Expert (parent or bike shop owner, professional cyclist) may run a F2F workshop leading learners through tyre and puncture repair. Learners will watch the video and take turns to remove, repair and replace a punctured wheel. Teachers may choose to carefully puncture the tyre with a thumb-tack or drawing compass.
