Abstract

to help student with disabilities succeed in the classroom with the help of assistive technology
Stated in this paper will be the consideration guide! assistive technology implementation plan!
student comments! observations! and performance data

The student that " am wor#ing with on the Assistive Technology Experience is a student
with special needs Aaron has a few disabilities! one of which " choose to focus on! his
difficulties with writing $e has a hard time writing legibly and organi%ing his notes to study and
perform well on assignments and tests
&efore we began this experience! the student was only using a des#top computer located
in the special education classroom to ta#e notes &ecause the computer was not available to him
in each classroom! he also had to use the Kur%weil '((( program This is a program that allows
the students to listen to the textboo# )ow! the student has a laptop to ta#e to each class This
allows him to type notes in each class and use any other assistive software tools that he may need
such as the Kur%weil The student is also able to ta#e the computer or notes home to help him
study and complete assignments with more accuracy " had discussions with the student about
how the laptop was wor#ing for him and he had a positive response the new technology $e is
able to #eep up with what is being taught in class and is more successful on tests
" thin# that the AT provided to the student was successful " do believe that there are more
AT tools that could help improve the students success *ne of the tools " would suggest is the
live scribe pen This is a pen that allows the student to write any notes for any sub+ect and the
notes will be stored and are accessible to the student at any time This device will also record the
lesson being taught so that the student can listen to the lesson later if he or she needs to revisit
the items taught There are also many applications available on the i,ad that would help a student
with difficulty writing such as dragon dictation This application allows the student to spea# what
they have written using a microphone and the application will type exactly what they say This
will still re-uire some editing by the student but could be a very useful tool
