Search and Evaluating Web Resources: Student Sheet

Note: This student sheet is intended for use with the Information Literacy online unit
located at http://infolitwebresources.weebly.com/.

Name Brandon Lara

Activity 2c: Write two paragraphs that address the following questions:

What information literacy skills do you think should be taught to K-12 students?
Why do you think these skills should be taught?
How do the National Education Technology Standards for Students and the
Common Core Standards address information literacy?
As technology is evolving and becoming an essential part of our lives, its very
important we teach our students the proper way to use the internet and other material
that provides facts. With internet being the leading resource to find information we have
to educate our students which websites are factual and what ones are opinions. In
regards to teaching our students literacy skills I believe teachers should start teaching in
an age range from 7-9 years old. As a teacher I think its critical that we teach literacy
skills such as, analyzing the source and checking the creditability of the source. By
teaching students literacy skills will allow students to complete and find information
thats factual. For example in sally case, since she didnt know that the website was not
factual she could believe the false information and present it to the class. This could let
to a domino effect and could cause students believing false information. If she was
taught literacy skills, she would have been able to tell that the information given was not
factual and not used any of the information.

The National Education Technology Standards for Students and the Common Core
Standards address information literacy in a way that students gain evaluating skills and
knowledge to live a productive life in the digital world. Also, by the students having
these skills will allow students to be able to be prepared for their future when they are
trying to get a job in the completive job field.

Activity 3b: Think about the classroom scenario presented in the online unit.
Brainstorm at least three good questions that Sally can use to focus her quest for
information.
1. Who was affected by the Jim Crow laws?

2. What impact did King have on the law?

3. Why did they want to abolish the law?

Activity 4c: Using different search terms, phrases and/or search engines or directories,
conduct at least 3 searches on a topic of your choice and record your results. (Similar
to the example in Activity 4c in the online unit)
Topic:

Search Engine or Directory Used:

Search terms (including keywords, Boolean logic and/or
exact phrases

1.Malcolm X

2.malcolm x civil right act

3.malcolm x speech

Number of search results

1.1,650,000

2.310,000

3. 11,800,000

Activity 5e:
1. Enter martinlutherking.org into the easywhois search: http://www.easywhois.com/
2. Locate the registrant organization
3. Do a Google search on the registrant organization to find out more about the
organization
4. Answer the questions below

Who is the registrant organization of http://www.martinlutherking.org/? What is this
organization?

The registrant organization of the website is Stormfront. The organizations are a racial
white pride group that believes in separation and great power for all whites.

Activity 5f: Let's consider our Martin Luther King Jr. example one more time. Let's
suppose that after using specific search strategies, Sally lands on the following Web
page: http://www.thekingcenter.org/about-dr-king

Evaluate this Web site for use in Sally's research on Martin Luther King Jr. Use the
criteria and strategies you learned about it Activities 5c-5e in the online unit. Then, use
the space below to address the following tasks.

Record as much information as you can about the Web site. Use the questions in
Activity 5c of the online unit to guide your information quest.
Who: the national historical site, IPM,JPMorganchase,
What :the kingcenter.org,website/ historical site,
When: was revised 2014, no dead links
How : in paragraph form, by topics, tabs, bolded heading
Other information: has reliable links, sponsored by business, place to visit, time to call,
contact information, pictures, dates and events.

What is your overall evaluation of this Web site? Is this a good Internet resource for
Sally to use for her research? Write 1-2 paragraphs responding to these questions.
After researching sally first website, I would have to say that the second website is a
very reliable website. The website is sponsored by major companies and have an actual
address were people can physically go visit the historical site. Also they state actual
facts about the Kings life and even talk about his wife. Next, the website breaks down
the different topics into tabs so it makes it easy for students to find information quickly.
Last, the website answers the entire question in section 5. All these points I think make
this a great website to find and retain information.

As a teacher I would encourage sally to use this website for her project. I would not
discipline sally for looking at the other website. I would use that as a teaching point in
literacy skills and talking about how the first website is very biased in many points. I
would go over both the websites with her just as I did for this lesson and show her the
things to look for when trying to find reliable sources.

Activity 6b: Reflect on what youve learned about information literacy, the information
provided in this unit, and questions you still have about the topic. Use the following
questions to guide your 3-4 paragraph response.

What is information literacy and why is it an important topic for K-12 students?
What specific skills (technology and non-technology skills) are necessary to
effectively find and evaluate Internet resources?
How does information literacy align to national and state standards and grade
level curriculum?
How do the ideas of information literacy relate to teaching strategy and
pedagogy?
How can a teacher help students acquire information literacy skills?
What questions do you still have about information literacy?
How helpful was this online unit in providing you with basic information literacy
skills?

As for context area my physical education, I believe that teaching information literacy
skills can still use in my field. Some examples that my students would use the skills
would be if I assigned my students to look up the history of a sport, a historical figure,
and historical laws that involve sports. Some specific tactics I would tell my students to
use to make sure the website is factual would be to check who the author.

FortThe National Education Technology Standards for Students and the Common Core
Standards address information literacy in a way that students gain evaluating skills and
knowledge to live a productive life in the digital world. Also, by the students having
these skills will allow students to be able to be prepared for their future when they are
trying to get a job in the completive job field. In the school setting, I think the national
standards do align with grade levels and the intelligence of the students. Just like
ALA.org says, we dont want to put our kids in data smog if we give the kids too much
information at once it can hurt the students more than help them.

Overall I think this online unit was very helpful for me and will be one day for my
students when it comes time to teaching information literacy. The skills that were
provided were in great detail and broke down the main topic into subtopics. Even with
most of the information being a review for me I still learned something. For example the
website easywhois.com I didnt know existed. I thought it was awesome website to use
to check creditable of the site. After this lesson I do not have any questions about
literacy skills.
