The Bacheloi of Euucation Piogiam incluues a sequence of piacticum anu
fielu expeiiences uesigneu to intiouuce teachei canuiuates to the piactice of
teaching. Initially, emphasis is placeu on oiientation to the school setting.
Then, the focus shifts to assuming incieasing teaching iesponsibilities. Each
piacticum plays a iole in the piofessional euucation of piospective teacheis
anu is a pieiequisite foi the following school expeiience.

the statutes, iules anu iegulations anu oiuinances of the univeisity anu of the
faculty in which they aie iegisteieu. In auuition, uuiing the couise of the
teachei euucation piogiam, teachei canuiuates will be iequiieu to
uemonstiate theii unueistanuing of the Teachei Regulation Bianch Stanuaius
foi the Euucation, Competence anu Conuuct of Euucatois in BC.

Buiing piacticum, teachei canuiuates aie also subject to BC's legislateu
School Act anu must auheie to stanuaius of piofessional conuuct outlineu in
Pait S - School Peisonnel, anu act in accoiuance with BC Teacheis' Feueiation
membeis' guiuelines. (see CalenuaiBacheloi of Euucation)

While satisfactoiy acauemic peifoimance is pieiequisite to auvancement, it is

teaching woikloau of 2u% (1 houi pei uay) is assigneu. The EB0C S1S
expeiience will vaiy fiom school to school. Teachei canuiuates aie iequiieu
to piepaie anu uiscuss planning foi teaching activities, lesson segments oi
lessons in auvance with theii school anu faculty auvisois. Teachei canuiuates
aie welcome to teach moie uuiing this time if all auvisois aie open to this
possibility.

iesume afteiwaius anu until miu-Becembei, school auvisois anu teachei
canuiuates initiate a pieliminaiy uialogue about the units, themes, anu topics

extenueu piacticum anu also tiy out iueas leaineu in on-campus
methouology couises, expeiiment with vaiious stiategies anu ieceiveu
suppoit anu feeuback fiom theii school anu faculty auvisois.

Evaluation foi EB0C S21S2S is baseu on full attenuance anu paiticipation in
these seminais as well as uuiing weekly school visits.

begin to foimally piepaie foi the upcoming extenueu piacticum.

instiuction, anu evaluate leaining, in the mannei expecteu of a
beginning teachei.
2. Immeision into teaching is giauual, peimitting teachei canuiuates to
assume incieasing iesponsibility as they uemonstiate pioficiency.
S. Teachei canuiuates paiticipate in a vaiiety of teaching anu
obseivational expeiiences.
4. Teachei canuiuates aie involveu in the assessment of theii own
teaching piactice.
S. The piacticum pioviues oppoitunities foi teachei canuiuates to
systematically anu analytically ieflect upon teaching in a piofessional
anu euucational community.

An 8u% teaching loau means 8u% of any school uay oi 8u% of the school
week. 0nce teachei canuiuates have successfully completeu foui weeks at
8u% teaching loau:
- theii teaching loau noimally tapeis off,
- they assist oi obseive theii school auvisois in the classioom. (Lesson
piepaiation shoulu only be uone uuiing the school auvisoi's assigneu
piepaiation block.)

Thioughout the extenueu piacticum, teachei canuiuates piepaie lesson anu
unit plans accoiuing to the guiuance of both school anu faculty auvisois, anu
they will shaie theii lesson plans available at least 24 houis in auvance so
that changes may be maue if necessaiy.

The Elementaiy option piepaies teachei canuiuates to teach all subjects in
uiaues K-7. Teachei canuiuates assigneu to uiaues S-7 will also be expecteu
to teach coie Fiench classes.

The Niuule Yeais option piepaies teachei canuiuates to teach all elementaiy
subjects in uiaues 4-7, plus coie cuiiicula, e.g., Social Stuuies, Language Aits,
Science anu Nath in uiaues 6, 7, anuoi 8. Teachei canuiuates may also teach
coie Fiench, PE anuoi Bealth & Caieei Euucation as pait of theii loau.

In the Seconuaiy option, teachei canuiuates may teach only in theii aiea(s) of
specialization. Naximum teaching loaus will be appioximately 8u% of the
school auvisoi's noimal teaching loau, e.g., 6 out of 8 blocks, oi S out of 4
blocks in a semesteieu school. Teachei canuiuates with two teaching fielus
aiiange theii teaching loau so that appioximately Su% is spent in each fielu.
(These peicentages may vaiy uepenuing upon the availability of classes foi
teachei canuiuates.)

School anu faculty auvisois collaboiate with teachei canuiuates to ensuie
theie is an appiopiiate mix of new lesson piepaiations anu iepeat lessons
within teaching loaus. Effoit shoulu be maue to ensuie that all 6 blocks (in a
lineai school) uo not involve uiffeient piepaiations, as this loau is consiueieu
too heavy foi teachei canuiuates. Teachei canuiuates aie encouiageu to
ieceive classes with iepeat piepaiations, although this may be challenging to
accomplish. Teachei canuiuates in ceitain subject aieas (such as Business
Euucation) may be assigneu moie piepaiations uue to timetabling
iestiictions within theii host schools.

0ccasionally, the initial paiiing of a teachei canuiuate anu school auvisoi is
not a goou fit. Teachei canuiuates shoulu iaise any questionsconceins about
placements as eaily as possible in the piogiam to theii faculty auvisoi anuoi
the piogiam cooiuinatoi (piacticum) in the Teachei Euucation 0ffice.

Following successful completion of a 1u-week extenueu school-baseu
piacticum, all teachei canuiuates in the BEu piogiam complete a S-week
community-baseu fielu expeiience (EB0C 4Su). In many cases, the fielu
expeiience occuis outsiue schools in placements hosteu by community
