This project is developed as an integral
proposal for the Otavalangos Communi-
ty, who where former workers and now
owns the factory.
Starting with an urban analysis, which
includes the studies of the citys main
artifcial and natural features, a Touristic
Circuit as an urban project emerges;
which integrates the urban and rural ar-
eas with the specifc architectural project.
The factorys rehabilitation proposal
conjugates formation, exhibition and
interpretation activities by adapting the
existent spaces to these new uses.
El proyecto ha sido desarrollado como
parte de la propuesta integral para la
comunidad Otavalango, que es pro-
pietaria de la fbrica tras un proceso de
compra por parte de ex trabajadores.
Empezando por un anlisis urbano que
incluye los estudios de las principales
caractersticas artifciales y naturales de
la ciudad, un circuito turstico ha sido
elaborado.
La rehabilitacin de la fbrica incluye
nuevos usos entre los cuales constan:
formacin, exhibicin e interpretacin
de actividades culturales mediante la
adaptacin de los espacios existentes en
conjunto con nuevos espacios.

Conjugating new architectural languages
with old structures enriches and renews
the buildings spatial and morphological
features. The inclusion of new program
and new structure creates new relations
with the outside landscape and produces
contrast with the existing construction,
giving a new architectural character to
the building.
The proposal generates spaces for
creation, diffusion and refection about
cultural manifestation, wherein the
endogenous cultural features are partic-
ularly valorized. Dynamic, random and
endless cultural processes have as protag-
onist the indigenous community, in the
same spaces where earlier was tragically
exploited.
The preserved edifcation testifes its his-
tory and the new architecture represents
its triumph over adversity, going though
the existing building violently in order to
create new spaces that are customized to
their necesities.
Las caractersticas morfolgicas y espa-
ciales de la edifcacin son enriquecidas y
renovadas conjugando un nuevo lenguaje
arquitectnico con la estructura edifcada
existente.
La propuesta genera espacios para
la creacin, difusin y refexin en
referencia a manifestaciones culturales,
en donde las caractersticas culturales
endgenas son particularmente valo-
radas. Procesos dinmicos, aleatorios
e inacabados son representados en la
intervencin, teniendo como protag-
onista a la comunidad indgena, en los
mismos espacios en dnde previamente
fue trgicamente explotada.
La edifcacin preservada es el testimo-
nio de su historia, y la nueva arquitectura
representa el triunfo de la comunidad
sobre la adversidad, atravesando vio-
lentamente la edifcacin existente para
poder generar espacios adaptados a sus
necesidades.
The Chiche canyon in Quito presents
unique geomorphological features and
an overwhelming natural landscape. The
project has been conceived as the scen-
ery for the appreciation of this ecological
protected area through an observation
bridge as the main public space. Here,
people can enjoy nature in its plenitude.
Additionally, they can access into the
building from this place. The three vol-
umes that compose the project encom-
pass logically the natural conditions of
the terrain.
El can del ro Chiche ofrece carac-
tersticas geomorfolgicas nicas y un
exuberante paisaje natural. El proyecto
se convierte en un escenario para el
corredor natural ecolgico, mediante un
gran espacio pblico que consiste en un
puente mirador a travs del cual se des-
cubre al objeto arquitectnico. Los tres
volmenes que componen el proyecto se
emplazan mimetizndose en la pendiente
negativa del terreno.

Adapting the building to the existing
geomorphological conditions was
the premise in order to optimize the
placement of the house. The levels were
placed following the slope, adjusting the
architectural object mimetically in this
context. Following this logic, the project
develops upside down, with the social
functions on the top level and the most
private areas downstairs.
La adaptacin a las condiciones
geomorfolgicas fue la premisa para
optimizar la implantacin del proyecto,
con terrazas adaptadas a la pendiente
negativa que mimetizan al objeto
arquitectnico en su contexto. Siguiendo
esta lgica, el programa se desarrolla a la
inversa del de una vivienda convencional,
en correspondencia con la pendiente
negativa del terreno, se ha establecido
el ingreso y las reas sociales en la parte
superior y las reas privadas en la parte
inferior.

Casa en La Armenia / House in La Armenia
The house opens towards the great
and vast landscape of El Valle de los
Chillos. It is a window that encapsulates
the benefts from the equatorial sun. The
sun always rises to the east, to the great
openings of the house.
The roughness of the volumes refects
the artisanal character of the building;
the craftsmanship of how it was built is
reveals the lack of specialized construc-
tion workers in Quito. The brick that is
produced in a pre-industrial fashion in
the area was left as found.
La casa se abre hacia el grande y vasto
Valle de los Chillos. Es una ventana
que encapsula los benefcios del sol
ecuatorial. El sol siempre sale por el este,
hacia las grandes aberturas de la casa.
La irregularidad de la textura en los
volmenes refeja el carcter artesanal de
el edifcio; la manera en cmo la casa fue
construida revela la falta de trabajadores
especializados en la construccin en
Quito. EL ladrillo usado, por ejemplo, ha
sido proveniente de la zona y se fabrica
de una manera pre-industrial.

What is value in architecture? What tools
and elements could defne this value?
And how some buildings have prevailed
throughout time because of their design
features? These where some of the ques-
tions raised by the studio. Even though
none of them were answered accurately,
the project dealt with an a priori and
instinctive identifcation and defnition
of value. This was the premise for the
design process, not as a constraint but
as a hint that could lead to speculate
towards new design strategies for the
contemporary conditions of cities.
Qu es valor en arquitectura? Cules
son las herramientas y elementos que
podran defnir este valor? Cmo algunos
edifcios han prevalecido a travs del
tiempo debido a sus caractersticas de
diseo? Ests fueron algunas de las
preguntas que el estudio plante. A pesar
que ninguna de ellas fue respondida
con precisin, el proyecto lidi con una
identifcacin y defnicin instintiva y a
priori de valor en arquitectura. Esta fue
la premisa para el proceso de diseo,
no como una limitacin sino como una
pista que podra llevar a la especulacin
de nuevas estrategias de diseo para
las condiciones contemporneas de las
ciudades.

Qu podemos aprender de un espacio negado? Sus proporciones, dimensiones y confguracin geomtrica se asemejan a aquellas
estructuras urbanas que fueron construidas a otro ritmo, a un desarrollo ms humano y orgnico que no responda a una retcula
comerciable.
What can we learn from a neglected space? Its proportions, dimensions and geometrical confguration resembles those urban fab-
rics that were built at another pace, a more human and organic growth that did not respond to a rigid and marketable grid.

Este proyecto explor el valor de el vaco en lugar de la arquitectura en si misma. Lo que es considerado como desperdicio o como
un espacio ordinario sin diseo, como los patios interiores en New York, incitaron un acercamiento hacia una nueva tipologa,
extrayendo la complejidad humana que ha permanecido escondida bajo la rigurosa y artifcial retcula neoyorquina.
Consecuentemente, los patios interiores fueron estudiados como Camillo Site lo hiciera hace ms de un siglo, celebrando un valor
pintoresco en la intrincada estructura urbana medieval, en contra de la retcula racionalista.
This project explored the value of empty spaces rather than of architecture itself. What is considered as left over or an ordinary
undesigned space, such as New Yorks back alleys, triggered an approach for a new typology, extracting the human complexity that
has been kept hidden under the rigorous Manhattan grid
Hence, the internal patios were studied as Camilo Site would do in 1900, claiming a picturesque value on the intricacy of the medi-
eval urban fabric against the rationalist machine-like grid.
El estudio adicionalmente provoc la refexin acerca de cmo funciona la ciudad. Son todas las calles necesarias en una ciudad
como New York? Las proporciones existentes son las adecuadas para el desplazamiento actual de personas? Estadsticas muestran
que la mayora de personas viviendo en Manhattan no usan automvil y van hacia sus actividades diarias caminando, conduciendo
una bicicleta o usando el transporte pblico.
But this also led to a refection on how the city operates. Are all the streets needed in a city like New York? Are the proportions
adequate for the current displacement of people? Statistics show that the majority of people living in Manhattan do not own a car
and go to their daily activities either walking, ridding a bicycle or using public transportation.

Manhattan podra ser totalmente reconfgurado, basado en la premisa que el automvil se ha convertido en un elemento relati-
vamente obsoleto y sus calles podran ser reducidas. Extrayendo la complejidad escondida tras la retcula, la arquitectura tomar
posesin de la calle como la mas clara demostracin en contra del origen utilitario de la retcula, como una forma de devolver un
espacio que es fundamentalmente e histricamente pblico, pero que hasta ahora ha sido dedicado y subutilizado por el automvil.
Manhattan could be totally reconfgured based on the premise that cars have become relatively obsolete for this city and its streets
could be narrowed down. In a way taking out the complexity that has been hidden inside the rigorous grid, Architecture will occu-
py the street as the ultimate demonstration against the utilitarian origin of the grid, as a way to give defnitively back a space that is
fundamentally public, but so far has been devoted and underused by the car.

Medellin has gone through a process of
being one of the most dangerous cities
to being considered in 2012 the most
innovative city in the world by the New
York Times. After decades of being
dominated by fear, a byproduct of the
war set up by a Narco Regime (with
Pablo Escobar as the most important
leader), Politicians alongside with private
corporations have intervened a depressed
society primarily through the transfor-
mation of the social space.
The studio constituted a critic of what
is happening in Medellin nowadays after
this events, what means to be a city in
Latin America considered innovative
worldwide because of architectural and
urban interventions. As a result of these
critic, a new Imaginary for the city was
developed. What is the next step for a
city that is still in process of recovering
from its violent past?
Medelln ha atravesado un proceso
desde haber sido considerada una de las
ciudades ms peligrosas del mundo hasta
ser considerada una de las ciudades ms
innovadoras por el New York Times
en el 2012. Despus de varias dcadas
de haber sido dominada por el miedo,
un producto indirecto de la guerra
organizada por el rgimen Narco (con
Pablo Escobar como su ms importante
fgura), Polticos junto a corporaciones
privadas han intervenido esta sociedad
deprimida principalmente a travs de la
transformacin del espacio social.
El estudio constituy una crtica
a lo que est pasando en Medelln
hoy en da despus de estos eventos,
qu signifca ser en una ciudad
Latinoamericana considerada
innovadora a nivel mundial debido a
sus intervenciones arquitectnicas y
urbanas. Como resultado a esta crtica,
un nuevo imaginario para la ciudad fue
desarrollado. Cul es el siguiente paso
para una ciudad que an se encuentra en
proceso de recuperacin de su pasado
violento.

Como primera parte del estudio, se realiz una investigacin de los
fenmenos urbanos presentes en la ciudad siguiendo la lnea del texto:
Brussels: Towards The Catipal of Europe editado por el Berlage Insti-
tute. En base a este texto, la ciudad de Medelln fue analizada como un
archipilago, ( En el sentido que Oswald Mathias Ungers lo hace en su texto
The City in the City. Berlin: A Green Archipelago) comprendiendo a los
fragmentos urbanos existentes como la muestra de la totalidad. En el caso de
Medelln, las islas de este archipilago fueron defnidas por sus condiciones
socio-econmicas que presentan claras delimitaciones y rupturas en la confg-
uracin urbana.
The frst exercise of the studio consisted on a research about the urban phe-
nomena in the city, following the criteria of the book: Brussels: Towards the
Capital of Europe edited by the Berlage Institute. According to this text, the
city of Medellin was considered an archipelago (along Ungers and Koolhaass
lines in The City in the City. Berlin: A Green Archipelago) understanding
the existing fragments as a small version of a bigger totality. In Medellins
case, the islands where defned by the current socio-economical boundaries
that clearly break apart the existing urban fabric.

Un Manifesto para Medelln:
Hacia la disrupcin de la ciudad.
Artefactos (Objetos Arquitectnicos) que funcionan como conos son usados como
soluciones explicitas para cada comunidad, promoviendo su identidad, celebrando su
condicin, perpetuando su aislamiento. Por esta razn, toda la ciudad opera como un
grupo de islas extremadamente separadas en dnde los lmites de inequidad social son
reforzados.
Medelln debe dejar a un lado la idea preconcebida de que los tugurios son un territo-
rio complicado e intocable y tampoco debe celebrarlos. De la misma forma, la condi-
cin de las urbanizaciones cerradas como un territorio privado debe ser irrespetada.
Debemos olvidarnos del territorio fracturado que marca pedazos aislados de ciudad
en la ciudad. Debemos pensar en la ciudad como un plano continuo y homogneo en
dnde los lmites desaparecen.
Por un Urbanismo sin exclusin social. No a las delicadas intervenciones de acupun-
tura! No a la celebracin de la pobreza! No al aislamiento patrocinado!
Es necesaria una violenta disrupcin de esta realidad.
Even though the city has been awarded and recognized internation-
ally because of its achievements it is evident that this new monu-
ments have been conceived only as palliative interventions in order
to solve urgent problems that were affecting the city, or as material
representation of the change.
These icons have not yet blurred defnitively the boundaries of
social inequality. This condition should be challenged in order to
drastically disrupt social boundaries.
Siguiendo la idea del gobierno local, el proyecto busca comprometerse con el discurso
poltico actual de crear puentes (conos arquitectnicos) que han empezado a unir dis-
tintos barrios antes aislados. La propuesta, en lugar de ser una retrica acerca de unir
barrios separados en la ciudad, lo hace pragmticamente. Constituye literalmente tres
puentes que conectan la ciudad de este a oeste mediante un espacio pblico continuo.
Diseado discursivamente con la intencin de atraer a polticos debido a su inters
pblico, el proyecto trae consigo una doble agenda que intenta irrumpir en las
barreras an existentes en la ciudad mientras trae gente desde los barrios marginales
hacia el centro de la ciudad que se encuentra dotado de servicios. Para poder traer
habitantes desde la periferia hacia la red de oportunidades que la zona central ofrece,
el proyecto se convierte en un canal de circulacin que despus se habita no informal-
mente sino debido a las caractersticas en su diseo.
Following the current idea of the local government, the project seeks to engage with
the current political discourse of creating bridges (icons) that begin to join the differ-
ent isolated neighborhoods. The proposal, rather than being a rhetoric about joining
isolated neighborhoods in the city, it does it pragmatically. It constitutes literally three
bridges that connect the city from west to east with a continue public space.
Discursively designed to attract politicians due to its public interest, the project
conveys a double agenda that seeks to disrupt boundaries in the city while bringing
people from the marginal poor neighborhoods to the well served center. In order to
put people as close as possible to the opportunities that well served ares provide, the
project becomes a circulation channel that later on becomes inhabited not informally
but due to its design features.

Proceso de transformacin de espacio pblico a viviendas / Transformation process from Public space to Housing
Balcones, escaleras y cortinas son los tres
elementos que confgurarn las futu-
ras viviendas en la ciudad de la eterna
primavera.
Balconies, staircases and curtains are the
three elements that will confgure the fu-
ture housing in the city of eternal spring.
Mumbai, previously called Bombay, was
originally an archipelago. The shape
of the city is the byproduct of violent
geological changes. The city has been
growing towards the sea for the last two
centuries.
In spite of these violent changes in the
structure of the city, iconic buildings
in the urban fabric have endured these
dramatic transformations like the town
hall or Victoria terminus .
This project explores how a contempo-
rary monumental building could coexist
within the oldest zone in Mumbai, cre-
ating a new layer on top of the existing
building environment of the Fort Area.
Mumbai, previamente llamado Bombay,
fue originalmente un archipilago. La
ciudad ha sido formada a lo largo de
violentos cambios geolgicos. La ciudad
ha continuado creciendo hacia el mar
durante los ltimos dos siglos.
A pesar de estos violentos cambios en
la estructura geolgica de la ciudad,
edifcios icnicos en la trama urbana
han logrado sobrevivir estas dramticas
transformaciones.
Este proyecto explora como
un monumento arquitectnico
contemporneo puede ser capaz de
coexistir en la zona ms antigua de la
ciudad, creando una nueva capa sobre el
entorno construido del centro histrico.

Tomando como punto de partida la trama urbana existente, el edifcio resalta los lmites de la
ciudad en el siglo XX hacia al este y reproduce esta geometra sobre la parte ms antigua del
trazado hacia el oeste.
Taking as a starting point the existing urban fabric, the building highlights the limit of the
city in the 20th century to the east and replicates its geometry on top of the oldest urban
fabric to the west.

El cuadrado ha sido tomado como una fgura impuesta a priori. La forma ha sido decidida
desde el inicio subjetivamente, de tal manera que el proyecto posteriormente evita lidiar con
exploraciones formales en su partido general. Este cuadrado enmarca la zona Fort Area
en Mumbai de manera paulatina, empezando por sus patas que son edifcios ordinarios, y
luego completando la fgura monumental en varios aos o inclusive dcadas. De tal manera
que el proyecto no slo es un monumento en si, sino que monumentaliza el pedazo de tejido
urbano que encierra.
The squared fgure has been taking as a given. The form is decided from the begining so that
he project does not deal with formal explorations of any sort in its general parti, not unlike
part of Rossis project for the Centro Direzionale di Torino, Dogmas One Simple Heart or
a religious Tomb in Ahmedabad. This square encloses the Fort Area in Mumbai not at once
but beggining with its legs and then completing the monumental fgure in a matter of
years or even decades. So besides being a monument in itself, it monumentalizes the existing
conditions of this piece of urban fabric.
Las calles en el centro histrico de Mumbai han colapsado y no pueden soportar la circulacin de vehculos. Esta condicin ha
llevado a una concepcin de utilizacin efciente del espacio alternativa. Las calles estn destinadas al transito peatonal y a par-
queaderos pblicos entresemana y durante los fnes de semana se convierten en campos de cricket.
The streets in the Fort Area have already collapsed and no longer can support the circulation of cars. This condition has led to a
different notion of how this space is used effciently. The streets are mainly devoted to pedestrian circulation and parking places
during weekdays, and they become cricket felds on the weekends.
Al oeste, el edifcio es introducido en el tejido irregular, demoliendo parte de esta. / In the west
side, the building is introduced in the irregular urban fabric, taking the place of existing buildings.
Al este, el edifcio se adapta al tejido urbano existente. / In the east side, the building takes the
geometry of the existing grid so that it only attaches to the existing constructions
El proyecto aprovecha la condicin pedestre de esta zona de la ciudad, la celebra y la
promueve mediante la inclusin de una universidad en su programa principal.
Debido a que las universidades en general necesitan espacios para reunin e intimidad,
y que pueden ser transformados de programas educativos a otros totalmente pblicos
(como una librera, un gimnasio o una cafetera), su esquema ha sido aplicado para este
diseo, para replicar de cierta manera la condicin de efciencia programtica encontrada
en las calles de esta zona.
The project takes advantage of this pedestrian condition, celebrates it and promotes it
within its University program.
Since universities need spaces both for gathering and intimacy, and that can be switched
from educational to completely public (as a library, a gym or a cafeteria) its scheme has
been applied for the design of this project, as a way of replicating the existing condition
of programmatic effciency found on the streets of the fort area.

El proyecto ha sido dividido en dos espacios genricos esenciales para una universidad. Espacios compartimentados que pueden
acoger unidades de vivienda y aulas de clase indistintamente, y espacios de conglomeracin masiva los cuales contienen espacios
para reunin. La accesibilidad ha sido diseada para proveer admisin directa desde la calle hacia los principales espacios de con-
glomeracin masiva y para poder generar diferentes gradientes de intimidad a medida que uno se acerca a los espacios comparti-
mentados.
The project has been divided generally in two kind of essential spaces for a university, compartmented spaces that can host
housing units and classrooms indifferently, and massive conglomeration spaces, which contain pockets of gathering spaces. The
accessibility has been designed in order to provide direct admission from the street to the main massive conglomeration spaces and
to generate different gradients of intimacy as one gets closer to the compartmented spaces.
EL proyecto promueve la posibilidad para que la gente entienda sus verdaderas fron-
teras y se entere de su historia. Al fnal, el proyecto replica la efectividad con la cual
se desarrollan las actividades en este sector de la ciudad debido al colapso que ocurre
indirectamente por el colapso de sistemas inefcientes. As como la calle cambia su
audiencia en cuestin de horas, los espacios colectivos estn diseados para hacer lo
mismo pero en un espectro ms grande y diverso.
The project promotes the possibility for people from the city to envision its true
frontiers and acknowledge their history. At the end, the project resembles the
effectiveness that occurs as a byproduct of the collapse of ineffcient systems. As the
street changes its audience in a matter of hours, the collective spaces in the project are
meant to do the same but in a larger and more diverse spectrum.
Estos espacios pueden ser transformados programticamente, de tal forma que sus actividades cambien constantemente, con la

These spaces could be transformed programmatically so that the activities and users constantly switch, hopefully contributing to
the promulgation of knowledge within a country that currently has the largest population of analphabetic adults in the world with
287 million.
