My mentor teacher told me about a graphic organizer that he uses to help students to not only memorize, but also comprehend the vocabulary words. This graphic organizer is really effective because of the way it is set up. A sheet of paper is divided into four sections. The first section contains the vocabulary word. The second section gives a definition in the students own words. This is a good idea because it allows the students to construct their own learning. The third section is where the students draw a picture or diagram, giving the students a visual representation. The fourth section provides an example, allowing for contextualization.
How you plan to use this strategy in your Practicum, Internship, Student Teaching, or in your own classroom:
I really like this particular graphic organizer because it helps the students to contextualize, construct their own learning, and come up with examples. The only downside to using this strategy is that each vocabulary word takes up a lot of space. Each word requires a whole page. As a result, you would need to limit the amount of words you choose. If I were to use this in my class, I would make sure to only assign words. I have attached an example of the graphic organizer below.
