The Nezu Museum presents thespecial exhibitionKiyomaro: Master Swordsmith
to the Last Samurai to commemorate the200th anniversary ofKiyomaro's birth.
Minamoto Kiyomaro (1813- 1854) was arenowned swordsmith active at theend
ofthe Edo peri od. His fame was such that hewas dubbed theMasamune of
Yotsuya, echoing thename ofthe genius Kamakura period swordsrnith
Masamune and linking it to Kiyomaro's home intheYotsuya district ofEdo.
Kiyomaro (birth nameYamaura Tamaki) was bornin1813 (Bunka IO ) inKomoro intheShinsh region
(Nagano Prefecture) inJ apan. Hebeganmaking swords at ayoung agebut gaveup his career as a
swordsmith once. However, hecould not shed his fascination with swords, moved to Edo around the
age of 21, where hedevoted himself to sword making.
At theageof29 hespent about three years making swords inHagi (Yamaguchi Prefecture) inwestern
J apan, but thenreturned to Edo, where hecommitted suicide in1854 (Ka'ei 7) at theheight ofhis
popularity. Thereasonfor his suicide remains amystery.
This exhibition commemorates the200th anniversary ofKiyomaro's birth, and presents aselectionof
approximately 50of his finest swords. Intheir day these swords were highly praised for their dynarnic
form, thebeauty of their high quality steel, and thesense of energy intheir hamon (patternontheblade),
Wehope visitors to theexhibition will share theunforgettable appeal ofKiyomaro's masterful swords.
