JAEGAR (NATIT NO KCATTA), THE BLACK NINJA , DCONN, IAN OHHHHHCONNOR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN Germany Invented by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin Started building it in June, 1898 First flight was on July 2, 1900 HOW THE WEAPON WAS USED Raid twice a month with the zeppelins Carries 30 hours of fuel,8 bombs and 25 incendiary devices Would bomb cities but usually destroy only the buildings rather than killing the people Supposed to panic civilians rather than creating innocent casualties HOW THE WEAPON WAS USED PART 2 Designed to overpower British air-defence Originally flown at a low altitude and it was easy to shoot it down Germans made it fly higher in order to defend the aircraft HOW IT CHANGED FIGHTING TECHNIQUES In response to the Zeppelin, the British developed better anti-aircraft guns and fighters Fighters, of more powerful design, were armed with new explosive and incendiary ammunition IMPACT ON WAR J.P Became a solution to the reconnaissance problem. Gave the Germans a big advantage in the combat of the war. Allowed Germans to attack from the air with bombs. IMPACT ON WAR J.P It became the greatest achievement of the war. So great in fact that under the Treaty of Versailles the Germans were ordered to hand over their zeppelins. Instead they destroyed as many as they could rather than let anyone else use them.
PICTURE WW1 vs Modern Day ADVANTAGES OF THE ZEPPELIN The advantages tended to come early in the war, as they could carry a modest bomb payload for a great distance They were able to fly higher than interceptor planes In the dark they could sneak up on their targets ADVANTAGES PART 2 The enemies needed to develop phosphorus tipped bullets to counter the Zeppelins This Incendiary Ammo was used to penetrate the Zeppelins and burn them They were quiet DISADVANTAGES OF THE ZEPPELIN Gas used to raise it up in the air was made up of hydrogen HYDROGEN IS A EXPLODABLE GAS can be ignited by static electricity and hot bullets Zeppelins not very successful; death rate was 40%
DISADVANTAGES PART 2 No Parachutes in Zeppelins in order to make the Zeppelin lighter Zeppelins not very successful; death rate was 40%
IMPROVEMENTS There were 3 main improvements on the first Zeppelin (LZ-1) during WWI. The LZ- 2, LZ-3, & LZ-4 The LZ-2 had triangular girders which improved on rigidity and strength The LZ-3 & LZ-4 had large horizontal fins and elevators which extended flight time INTERESTING FACTS Zeppelins were the first aircrafts used in air raids. German Dumplings, this is what it was named after HINDENBURG ZEPPELIN Disaster in Lakehurst,NJ on May 6, 1937 This tragedy brought an end to the rigid airship age Thirty five people died when the Hindenburg caught fire mid- air, came crashing down, and exploded.
