According to zoologist Robert M. May from the University of Oxford the extinction
rate in the past 100 years today is 1,000 times more than it used to be before humans
showed up. Today humans are causing a cataclysmic extinction much more severe than
the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. There have been attempts to determine the rate of
extinction, however they more uncertainties than they uncover. A theory made by biologists,
suggests that even if a mass extinction has not happened, the collapse will happen pretty
soon. The proximity of a mass extinction, however, is not the initiative to conserve and
protect the environment, as May states that the actual and strongest argument to preserve
theenvironmentisitsutilitarianvalue.

ThoughtsontheTopic
The probability of a mass extinction or collapse of ecosystems happening soon is
astonishing and even more the fact that the strongest argument to preserve the
environment is not an extinction but its utilitarian value. I believe that the focus should
remain on preventing a mass extinction or collapse rather than the economic benefit, after
all, preserving the environment will prolong the life of many species as well as human
beings. I agree with the article, stating that the public is harder to convince on the issue. In
order to overcome this boundary the public can be educated on the issue of our
environmentsandthespeciesthatlivewithinthem.
