Multigenre Text Set
A multigenre text set is a collection of books that focuses on one main theme or topic
over a variety of genres such as nonfiction, biography, fiction, and poetry, etc. The purpose of a
text set is to have a wide variety of books that can spark the interest of many different types of
students, but over the same topic. It is a great way to organize multiple books in the same
category and be able to look through and find the exact book or genre that covers whatever
specific aspect that is being taught.
Different books can often cover different aspects of the specific topic which can help to
keep several different students involved and interested, since not all students think the same on
certain topics. Some students may prefer certain genres over others, and some may be more
interested in specific aspects of the theme or topic being covered. Through a multigenre text set
all students and their interests are more likely to be met rather than just assigning one book for
everyone to read over a specific topic.
For my multigenre text set I chose the American Revolution. As far as the state level of
curriculum, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills shows this topic as being covered in the
sixth grade. (#113.18, Section:A). According to the National Center for History in Schools, the
American Revolution, the causes, the revolutionary movement, the impact on politics, society,
and economy, as well as the government involved during the American Revolution is to be
taught in the United States Era 3 and Standards 1-3 are all covering the American Revolution.
My multigenre text set consists of contemporary nonfiction, biography, as well as
historical fiction. I feel that with the variety of genres it is more likely that each student will find
a book in which they are interested in, whether it be over the American Revolution as a whole,
the Revolutionary War, a specific person that was involved during the American Revolution, or
any aspect of the time period at all.
