Warm-Up/Anticipatory Set

Have students log onto Socrative. Sign in to room #154545 for pre-made quiz titled Weight
Management and Physical Activity. Have students answer questions individually.
Discussion/ explanation will likely follow each question. Explain to students how being
physically active improves weight management.
Talking point: after the question about a body in motion stays in motion, explain to
students how being active encourages one to always be active. Your body will crave activity
and habits will form. Not only in a physical sense but also on the happenings inside your
body! Metabolism will stay at a constant, healthy level as well as your heart rate etc.

Procedure
Activity 1 (2-3 day assignment)
Step # 1: Hand out survey questions to each student; they should all have a minimum of four
surveys. Explain that students can interview anyone they like: family, friends, or peers. The more
people they choose to interview, the better.

Step # 2: Read questions out loud; ask students if the questions make sense and are clear to them.

Step # 3: Emphasize that these surveys are anonymous. Students shall give the survey questions to
people, let them fill it out as thoroughly as possible, and then collect them back without any names
on the sheets.

Step #4: After a day or two when students have had the opportunity to collect the surveys back, they
will review and reflect on their findings.

Step #5: Hand them the reflection/ analysis paper directions. Students will write a 1.5-2 page paper
on their findings, answering the questions on the directions as they go along. This will give students
time to understand the relationship between weight management and the motivation to be
physically active.

Teaching Tips: Encourage an open discussion in the classroom about their findings before they
begin their reflection paper. Ask them if they saw any patterns. Does weight and self-perception
affect one gender over the other? Are younger adults more motivated to be active than older adults?
Did peoples idea of being normal or overweight upset you? How important is confidence in
yourself, especially when it comes to being active and achieving health goals?

Short PowerPoint Slide: slides will include what being healthy looks like; the Body Mass Index will
be included to show what healthy weights are. The amount of expected physical activity, and the
downsides to having a negative body image in relation to how physically active one is.

Activity 2:
Step #1: After discussing ones perception of their weight, ask students what motivates them to stay
healthy.
Step #2: Encourage students to bring in images from ads, internet, or magazines pertaining to being

healthy. Be sure to decipher the difference between Victoria Secret model-skinny and an actual
healthy person. (The powerpoint will make this more clear)
Step #3: Instruct students to individually or in groups of two or three make a collage that
demonstrates how being healthy and having a good body image encourages physical activity. The
collage should illustrate a healthy lifestyle, which not only includes a healthy weight but foods,
activities, and feelings of accomplishment and pride. This collage should make those who are lacking
motivation feel more inspired.
