NowthatwehavebeenintroducedtotheNortheastRegionandhavelearnedaboutits
Geographyandnaturalresources,wewillbemovingontothehistoryoftheNortheast
Region.Didyoueverwonderhowourhouses,schoolsandplaygroundsgothere?Itwas
notanaccident.Bytheendofthislesson,youwillknowhowthisregioncametobeand
whyitissoimportant.
Sinceyesterdaywelearnedaboutthegeographyandnaturalresources,cansomeonetell
mewhychildreninthe1500swouldcheerbecausetheirfatherbroughthomeadeer?
Studentswillturnandtalktoapartneraboutwhythedeerisacauseforcelebration.Theteacher
willbelisteningtoseeifthestudentsuseinformationthattheylearnedinthelessontheday
before.
Right,theNativeAmericansoftheNortheastwerehuntersandgatherersandtheywere
bringinghomefoodfortheirfamilies.
Beforewebeginourlesson,Iwouldliketointroduceyoutotwonewgroupsofpeoplethe
AlgonquianandtheIroquois.Thesetwotribesareveryimportanttothehistoryofthe
NortheastRegion.
TheteacherwillshowapictureofamemberoftheAlgonquintribeandamemberoftheIroquois
tribe.Theteacherwillalsopointtoamaponthesmartboardtoshowwherethesetwotribeswere
located.
1.4Procedures
1. Thestudentswillbeaskedtotakeatripbackintimefortodayslesson.
2. Asthestudentsworkthroughtodayslesson,theteacherwillbeusingaphysicalrepresentationof
atimelinesothatthestudentscanunderstandthetimingoftheevents.Thetimelinewillbevisible
throughouttheentirelesson.Thestudentswillalsohavetheirownworksheetswiththeblank
timelineaswellsothattheycanfillintheeventsastheteachergoesthroughthelesson.(After
completingthelesson,studentswillbeabletodescribethetimelineofeventsthatoccurredduring
theearlyyearsoftheUnitedStatesintheNortheastRegion.)
3. Canallofyoupleasecloseyoureyes?Imagineyoustepintoaspaceshuttlehelmetandit
takesyoubackintime,allthewaybacktothe1500s.Whatdoyouthinklifewouldbe
like?Whatwouldyoubewearing?Whatwouldyoubeeating?Nowopenyoureyes,but
stayinthistimeperioduntilIsayitisoktocomeback.
4. Theteacherwilllabelthebeginningofthetimelinewiththeyear1500andthecaptionNative
AmericansintheNortheast.Thestudentswillbeaskedtodothesameontheirownindividual
timelines.(Aftercompletingthelesson,studentswillbeabletodescribethetimelineofeventsthat
occurredduringtheearlyyearsoftheUnitedStatesintheNortheastRegion.)
5. Thestudentswillbetaughtthatatthistime,thereareonlyNativeAmericanslivinginthe
NortheastRegion.Thestudentswillberemindedofthenaturalresourcesthatwereavailableto
theNativeAmericans.ThestudentswillalsobetaughtthewaytheNativeAmericanshunted
animalsandgatheredberriesandnutsfortheirdailyfood.Theyalsousedwoodsfromtheforests
tobuildtheirhomes,tools,weaponsandcanoes.
6. TheteacherwillthenteachthestudentsabouttheleaderswhocausedthefivelargestIroquois
tribestojointogetherasaconfederation.
7. Aswithmanypeopleandfamilies,whenlivingandsharingsomanythings,theIroquois
andAlgonquintribesbegantofightoverthenaturalresources.TwoIroquoisleaders
namedHiawathaandDeganawida,convincedfiveofthelargestIroquoistribestojoina
confederation.Thisconfederationwouldbeagroupofgovernmentsthatworktogether.

teacherwillexplainhowthecolonieshadtofollowBritishlawsbutmostlygovernedthemselves.
19. AlthoughthecolonieswereundercontrolofGreatBritain,theygovernedthemselvesin
manyways!Eachcolonysetuptheirowngovernment,electedtheirownleadersandwrote
theirownlaws.However,thecolonistsdidnthaveanyrepresentationintheBritish
government.ThismeantthattheydidnthaveanyonefromtheircolonyintheBritish
governmenttorepresentthemhaveasayinwhichlawswerebeingpassed.Soon,the
Britishbegantopasslawsthatrequiredthecoloniststopaytaxesanditmadelifevery
hardforthecolonists.Theystartedaslogan,Notaxationwithoutrepresentation!

BritishcameintotheregionandbegantakinglandandresourcestosellinEngland.We
sawhowthecolonieswerecreatedandhowtheBritishruledthecolonies.Lastly,we
learnedabouttheAmericanRevolutionandhowweeventuallyreceivedourindependence!
ThisinformationisimportantbecauseitshowshowimportanttheNortheastRegionistothe
historyoftheUnitedStates.Itisimportanttorememberthatwedidnotreceive
independenceeasily.Caneveryonegivemeathumbsupiftheyfeelliketheylearnednew

Whenbeginningtoplanthislesson,wefirstthoughtaboutwhatitwaswewantedtoteach.Since
weonlyhadfortyfiveminutestoteachalargepartoftheUnitedStateshistory,wedecidedtousethe
textbookasourguide.Werealizedthatbuildingthelessonwithaspecificgoalinmindwouldhelpusto
knowwhatwewantedtoteach.Thefirstthingthatwaswrittenwastheobjectives.Thisallowedusto
haveafoundationforwhatthegoalofthislessonwouldbe,howeveritdidchangeaswegatheredmore
information.Onewaytoimprovethisplanistopossiblygivethestudentsanassessmentthattestedtheir
priorknowledge.Thiswouldhavehelpeduswhendecidingwhatwasimportanttomentionandwhatthe
studentsalreadyknew.WethinkthiswouldhavebeenaccomplishedthroughaKWLchart.
Wethinkthatapotentialsuccessofthislessonisthetangibleuseofatimeline.Wethinkthatthis
willconnectwithmostlanguageartscurriculumfoundinthefourthgradebecausetheyarelearningthe
keyfeaturesofinformationaltext.Wefeltthatanytimethatyouconnecttwoormoresubjectsyouare
enhancingthestudentsgeneralizationskills.Ouronlyconcernwiththelessonisengagement.Wehope
thattheamountofinformationthatisbeingprovidedwillnotbecomeoverwhelmingthusresultinginthe
childrenbeingbored.Wechosetoincorporatethetimelineinhopethatthechildrenwillhavesomethingto
