Key Vocabulary: Subtraction, minus, equal sign, popped off, and groovy
Hook: ( 5-7 Minutes)
I will begin the lesson by bringing the students down to the carpet. I will review Mentor
Teacher's expectations for carpet time (sitting criss-cross, hands in your lap, mouths quiet, ears
listening, etc...)

1. I will begin the lesson by using Side 1 of the Pete the Cat Felt Board and Review the
Vocabulary words and Mathematical Terms. This will help activate prior knowledge and
focus the students' attention.
2. I will then Distribute counters & 10 frame cards and explain the expectations for using them
correctly.
3. I will explain the use of Side 2 of the Pete the Cat Felt Board.
4. Introduce the book Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by reading the title, the author
and illustrator's name, and identifying the front and back cover of the book.
5. I will begin reading the story with pauses for comprehension questions.

Teacher Instruction: (10-15 Minutes)
1. I will conduct a read-aloud of Pete the Cat and His four Groovy Buttons.
2. I will pause during the reading to ask comprehension questions, remove buttons from the
felt Pete the Cat, and assist students in their small groups with their modeling of subtraction
using the counters and 10 frame cards.
3. After a brief retelling, I will model the worksheet activity, students will return to their seats,
and begin their sequencing worksheets (which require cutting & pasting).
Student Practice: (20 Minutes)
1. Practice with listening and literacy comprehension during the read-aloud
2. Practice with recognizing number concepts using math manipulatives to subtract with the
story.
3. Practice with story retelling and literacy sequencing during the independent worksheet
activity.
Assessment/Student Feedback:
Assessment:
o In the beginning of the lesson, during the "hook" students prior knowledge on the themes,
vocabulary words and concepts will be assessed through observation and interaction.
o During the Student Practice phase, the students will be asked to follow the story and emulate
the math problems in the text using counters and 10 frame cards.
o Additionally, students will also be asked to work independently to complete the literacy
sequencing worksheet, which will assess their story-retelling and math concept skills.
Feedback to Students:
o Students will be asked to provide and be provided with feedback throughout the lesson
through group read-aloud and discussion questions, guided assistance with the maniplatives
and further assistance with the worksheet.

Closure: When the majority of students are done, the youtube.com video/song re-telling
of the read aloud will be played.
