n Paris, London and

Moscow young museums
have toppled long-estab-
lished ones from the top
of the exhibition tree in
each respective city. But
globally Japans museums
remain in a league of their own
when it comes to organising
blockbuster exhibitions. In The
Art Newspapers 15th annual
survey of attendance figures
three Tokyo museums and
one in Nara, 300 miles south
west of the capital, fill the top
four places.
As in 2008, the average visi-
tor-per-day statistics from Japan
are staggering. When the Tokyo
National Museum displayed
Ashura, one of the nations most
famous Buddhist statues, along
with other treasures from the
Kohfukuji temple, Nara, on
average 15,960 people a day
went to see them. In Nara itself,
the capital of Japan in the eighth
century, almost the same num-
ber of people went daily to see
Shoso-in treasures, which
included objects belonging to
Emperor Shomu (701-756), at
the Nara National Museum.
When the Tokyo National
Museum borrowed treasures
from the Imperial Collection to
mark the 20th anniversary of the
coronation of Emperor Akihito,
it attracted a mere 9,473
visitors a day.
The huge crowds flocking to
see Japans spiritual treasures has
a spiritual as well as artistic
dimensionwith some people
praying in front of the objects in
the museums. This phenomenon
was the subject of a symposiumat
the Tokyo National Museum last
month. Greg Irvine, the senior
curator in the Japanese depart-
ment of the Victoria and Albert
Museum, London, who attended
the symposium and the Ashura
exhibition, says the popularity of
such shows is increasing, and it
mirrors the popularity of open
days in the temples. The negoti-
ations involved in getting [such
treasures] to the museum are end-
less, he says.
European old master paintings
remain a big draw in Japan. The
National Museum of Western
Art, Tokyo, borrowed paintings
from the Louvre, including work
by Rembrandt, Poussin and
Velzquez, to celebrate its 50th
anniversary. The show attracted
more than 850,000 visitors.
There is a museum new to the
blockbuster list in fifth place:
the Muse Quai Branly in Paris.
The ethnographic museum
attracted an average of 7,868
visitors a day to the second edi-
tion of its Photoquai Biennale, a
celebration of international pho-
tography, just ahead of Picasso
and the Masters at the Grand
Palais. Athird show in Paris, the
Pompidous Kandinsky,
proved almost as popular, which
put the venue in seventh place, a
rise of 30 places on its
Giacometti show in 2008.
In terms of strength in depth
from one institution, New Yorks
Museum of Modern Art
(MoMA) is unrivalled. In 2009
its exhibitions provided seven of
the top 16 shows. Joan Mir
attracted 6,299 visitors a day,
and Pipilotti Rists Pour Your
Body Out (7345 Cubic Meters),
a sensuous multi-media
makeover of its otherwise chilly
atrium, attracted almost the same
number of visitors. Van Gogh
and the Colours of the Night
attracted more than 436,000 vis-
itors in total, but when the aver-
age visitor per day is calculated,
the show comes after James
Ensor, Ron Arad, Martin
Kippenberger and Marlene
Dumas exhibitions. This may be
reflection of the effectiveness of
MoMAs timed-entry ticketing
for Van Gogh, however. Staying
in the US, the Metropolitan
Museum of Arts Vermeers
Masterpiece The Milkmaid, the
latter on loan from the
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, came
next after MoMAs best seven.
In recent years, the Royal
Academy of Arts, the British
Museum, Tate and the National
Gallery have staged Londons
crowd-pulling exhibitions. But in
2009, as in Paris, a newkid on the
block jumped to pole position.
The gallery of collector Charles
Saatchi, rehoused in the former
Duke of Yorks barracks, has
shifted the centre of gravity west-
ward in London to fashionable
Chelsea. The new gallerys open-
ing exhibition, The Revolution
Continues: NewArt from China,
and its follow-up, Unveiled:
New Art from the Middle East,
put it in first and third spot in the
UK list. Tate Moderns Rothko
exhibition, albeit a charging show
whereas the Saatchi Gallerys are
free, came eighth in the UK list-
ings. The
National
Ga l l e r y s
Corot to
Monet show
was ninth.
In second
place in the
UK is a muse-
um never
before ranked in
our survey.
Bristols munici-
pal museum and art gallery
was remixed by its local
street artist made good:
Banksy. Nearly 4,000 peo-
ple a day turned out to see
the results, trumping the
London-based nationals.
In Melbourne, Australia,
as in Bristol in the west of
England, people who do
not ordinarily go to muse-
ums were tempted by
Salvador Dal at the National
Gallery of Victoria. The
Spanish surrealist
drew 332,000 people,
just short of the art museums
record set in 2004 with an
impressionist show. Joaqun
Sorolla does not rank among the
giants of Spanish art, and yet an
exhibition of his narrative paint-
ings and portraits of the late 19th
and early 20th century broke a
ten-year-old attendance record at
the Museo del Prado, Madrid.
In Moscow, the new Garage
Centre for Contemporary Art
was the most visited venue in
the Russian capital, attracting
three times the number of
visitors per day to the Moscow
Biennial than the Tretyakov did
with a thematic exhibition of
flowers in Russian art.

CONTINUED PP24-29
All figures were calculated
automatically by our database,
which computes the number of
days an exhibition was open using
the following formula: total number
of days between start date and end
date, divided by seven, multiplied
by the number of days per week
the institution is open, minus excep-
tional closures. As this formula
always produces an imperfect num-
ber (a division of seven) all figures
are out by a potential margin of 2%.
As the same margin applies uni-
formly to all averages given, the list
represents a fair comparison, how-
ever. All data used was supplied by
the institutions concerned. Many
institutions have one ticket for the
entire museum and cannot provide
individual attendance for temporary
exhibitions. Some institutions offer a
number of exhibitions for a single
ticket: these are shown as one
entry. Institutions with more than
one building were asked to provide
separate total museum attendance
figures for each venue. These
venues are marked with an asterisk
(*). Institutions that could not pro-
vide separate figures were exclud-
ed from this portion of the survey.

DECORATIVE ARTS TOP TEN
The spirit of Diana Vreeland, who put the Metropolitan Museum of Arts
costume collection on the blockbuster map, lives on. The New York muse-
um's fashion exhibition The Model as Muse tops the 2009 decorative arts
list, even though it attracted 2,000 visitors per day fewer than the Met's
2008 costume extravaganza, Superheroes. The commitment of the Fine
Arts Museums of San Francisco to the decorative arts paid dividends with
two shows in the top ten. Yves Saint Laurent (fourth) and a triple whammy
of Faberg, Tiffany and Lalique at its Legion of Honor museum (ninth)
collectively drew 3,000 visitors a day. Ornate artefacts, including a helmet
from the 16th-century (left), at the Freer and Sackler Gallerys Tsars and
the East lured over 368,000 visitors to the Washington, DC, museum. J.P.

THEMATIC TOP TEN
Formerly called survey, this category features shows that span time
periods and/or categories but fall under one theme. Royal treasures
once again reign supreme with a display in Tokyo of paintings and
decorative objects created under the patronage of the Habsburgs
coming top. Drawn from the collection of Viennas Kunsthistorisches
Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, the exhibition
contained masterpieces by Drer, Velzquez, El Greco and Titian. Also
popular were exhibitions focusing on shadows in art, one staged in
Dublin and the other in Madrid (left, Andy Warhol, The Shadow, 1981),

CONTEMPORARY TOP TEN
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, regained its
contemporary top spot in 2009. The Grand Palais Nave, Paris,
displaced it in 2008 with Images in the Night. Pipilotti Rist's atrium
installation (left, still, 2008), Marlene Dumas and Aernout Mik exhibi-
tions, and a Martin Kippenberger survey provided four of the top five
shows at MoMA. Tokyo's National Art Center's media arts festival
and the new Saatchi Gallery, London, filled the third and sixth spots.
The street artist Banksy propelled Bristol City Museum and Art
Gallery into eighth. The Studio Sessions at the San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art, a new media-based show about the machi-
nations of the art world, provided an unexpected ninth place. J.P.

At the top of the annual museum attendance list for 2009, the worlds great encyclopaedic
museums, the Louvre, British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, stand proud as in
previous years. Institutions that have unveiled new wings include the Museo del Prado and the Art
Institute of Chicago: the Prados, which opened in April 2007, increased visitors comfort and
convenience more than numbers last year, accommodating an extra 4,100 people. But the
Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, which opened its doors in May last year, helped
boost the art museums attendance by almost 450,000. The Reina Sofa in Madrid also did well,
breaking the two million mark last year. J.P.
Institutions with more than one building such as the National Gallery of Victoria were asked to provide separate total museum attendance figures for
each venue. These venues are marked above with an asterisk (*).

IMPRESSIONIST AND MODERN TOP TEN
COMBINED TICKET TOP TEN
Jeff Koonss inflatable Lobster (left) was one of many sculptures by the
US artist to adorn the Chteau de Versailles over a four-month period
ending in January 2009. They helped draw one million people to the
palace outside Paris during the winter months. Dominique Gonzalez-
Foersters installation in the Tate Modern tops this category, however.
Admission to the combined-ticket section includes entrance to other
attractions, such a the grounds of Versailles, which distorts the exhibition
attendance. Likewise, tickets to the Mori Art Museum also allow access
to its popular observation platform overlooking Tokyo. Tickets to enter
the Hermitage and some Italian museums allow entry to the special
exhibitions as well, which the museums do not count separately. E.S.

ANTIQUITIES TOP TEN
The travelling exhibition of ancient treasures from the National Museum in
Kabul takes the top and tenth spot in this category, with the Houston pre-
sentation bringing in more than double the number of visitors of the New
York leg of the tour (left, Head from a clay temple statue, 2nd century BC).
The show is organised by National Geographic, which is also responsible
for the King Tutankhamun exhibitions; two variations of these boy-king
themed displays come in third and ninth. The rest of the top ten includes
shows devoted to ancient Egypt and Rome. Similar to last year, pre-
Columbian shows are noticeably absent, but as 2010 marks the bicentenni-
al of Mexicos independence from Spain, pre-Columbian exhibitions are
aplenty in 2010 and should rank high in next years survey. E.S.

Paris dominated this category in 2009, hosting five of the top ten shows.
The Grand Palais holds the coveted first place position for Picasso and the
Masters, a show exploring the influence on Picasso of artists such as Goya
and Van Gogh. The show was one of Frances most popular ever, drawing
7,270 people daily, making it the second highest ranking western show in our
survey. Another Picasso-themed show, at the Muse dOrsay, which coincided
with the Grand Palais display, comes in seventh. The Pompidous Kandinsky
retrospective comes in second (left, Blue Mountain, 1908-09) and its other
blockbuster, Alexander Calder, originally scheduled to open in 2008 but
postponed because of budget constraints, comes in at eighth. E.S.
MEDIEVAL TOP TEN
Nowhere is the decline of Christianity in contemporary western culture
more apparent than in the paucity of exhibitions of medieval art: for the first
time since The Art Newspaper began to publish attendance figures has the
medieval category failed to reach ten entries. Only one exhibition in 2009
featured illuminated manuscripts, which hitherto have been the backbone
of medieval shows. A surprising absentee is the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los
Angeles, which in the past has dominated this category. Byzantium at the
Royal Academy, London, takes the top spot (left, Icon of the Archangel,
Michael, 12th century), with Giotto, the subject of the top medieval show in

OLD MASTERS TOP TEN
That Vermeer should score twice in the old masters top ten is hardly
news, even when shows at the Met and the Rijksmuseum (left, Woman
Holding a Balance, around 1664) focused mainly on a single painting. The
Dutch artist also helped lure visitors to the National Museum of Western
Art, Tokyo, which borrowed both of the Louvres Vermeers. The Met also
drew the crowds with a show focusing on a single painting, the Kimbell
Art Museums The Temptation of St Anthony by Michelangelo. A growing
academic investigation of Renaissance decorative arts translated into an
exhibition hit with the public. The New York museums Art and Love in
Renaissance Italy claimed fourth spot, two above Michelangelo. D.L.

PHOTOGRAPHY TOP TEN
The second edition of Pariss photography biennial Photoquai, held at the Muse
Quai Branly, attracted a record number of visitors last year, perhaps drawn by the
exhibitions focus on non-western artists who are relatively unknown in Europe.
The most popular exhibitions in the US focused on more traditionalist fare, such as
the Museum of Modern Art in New Yorks romantic visions of the American West,
Into the Sunset, and Robert Franks Americans series (left, Political Rally
Chicago, 1956), at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The Whitneys
survey of William Eggleston was its most popular exhibition last year. And the
Michael C. Carlos museum capitalised on the King Tutankhamun exhibition it
helped organise at the Atlanta Civic Center with a related show of photographs
documenting the discovery of the young pharaohs tomb. H.S.

19TH-CENTURY TOP TEN
A striking feature of the top 19th-century art shows is that only
half of them were monographic; in previous years single-artist
exhibitions have monopolised the list. It is not surprising, given
the media attention accorded him during his bi-centennial, that
Darwin made what will surely be his unique appearance in the
annals of attendance figures. The Muse dOrsay made it to the
top ten with three hits, albeit rather predictable crowd-pleasers:
pastels, Rodin and photography. Ensor at MoMA, New York,
appealed to a mood for the macabre, and was an important
reassessment of the artists late career. Left, Hiroshige, 53
Stations of the Tokaido, 1833, at Museo Fondazione Roma. D.L.

ASIAN TOP TEN
Japans appetite for blockbuster exhibitions and the richness of its
cultural heritage resulted in its museums producing seven of the top ten
shows in our Asian category. But China's marching army of terracotta
warriors (pictured left) means that a US institution, the High Museum of
Art, Atlanta, is fifth on the 2009 Asian list. The National Museum of
Korea, Seoul, which is taking part in our survey for the first time, cele-
brated the centenary of Korean museums with an exhibition that put it in
seventh place. The Tokyo National Museum improves on its runner-up
ranking in 2008 with a show of temple treasures from Nara, making it
overall the most visited exhibition our survey. J.P.

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN TOP TEN
The Guggenheims self-reflective survey of the museums architect, Frank
Lloyd Wright, tied to its own 50th anniversary celebrations last year (left,
Guggenheim Museum, New York, 1943-59), was beaten to first place in
our survey for average daily attendance by the Museum of Modern Arts
show of contemporary designs by Ron Arad. But the Wright show drew
more visitors overall during its run. The summer pavilion at the Serpentine
Gallery in London, designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of
SANAA, continued to draw the crowds. Nearby, the V&A scored a hit with
Telling Tales, about contemporary designers love of narrative, and its sur-
vey of modern design on both sides of the Iron Curtain after1945. H.S.
