This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to explore universal themes presented through
classic and modern literature from world cultures, with a specic focus on British Literature and . Literature
analysis will focus on historical, philosophical, cultural, and ethical perspectives to gain global awareness. Strong
emphasis will be placed on student response to literature through discussion and composition. Students will
conduct literary analysis, criticism, persuasion, and research.

Students will continue to develop and strengthen their ability to develop the vocabulary acquisition and critical
thinking skills necessary to read a variety of texts. A large focus will be on attaining the rigorous writing and
analytical reading skills needed to be successful in college. Students taking this course should have
successfully completed American Literature or AP Language and Composition during their
junior year (C or better). Multiple writing projects will be completed per quarter, with an in tensive reading
schedule occurring throughout the year. In addition to these formal writing assignments, all tests will be short
answer and require students to make connections between units.

For this class, you will need...

English notebook/looseleaf paper Pen/Pencil Post-it notes
English folder iPad/Textbook/novels

Please bring these materials everyday! It is your responsibility to have these items with you. I will not provide any
of the materials (with the exception of books). You cannot be successful if you are not prepared.

In this class, I expect you to...
1) Follow the rules in your student handbook
2) Be prepared for class everyday (with materials and assignments)
3) Participate in discussion, ask questions, and share thoughts respectfully
4) Stay on task while working, not distracting the peers around you
5) Place all technology (iPads, cell phones, lap tops, tablets, etc) out of sight when not being used for academic
purposes. Technology may only be used in class when given direct permission by the teacher.

Grading...
Your grade will be determined by points earned on writing, projects, speeches, tests, quizzes, and homework
assignments. *Subject to change based on district policies. Any changes will be made known to students ASAP*

100-90 A
89-80 B - Late work will be accepted until the end of a unit
79-70 C - For a semester, each quarter is worth 40% and the nal exam is 20%
69-60 D - In-class work & homework are worth 30% of the quarter grade
59-0 F - Summative assessments (essays, written tests, etc) are worth 70%

Writing
Essays will always be considered a work in progress. COMPLETED essays must be turned in on the given due
date. All essays that are turned in on time and complete may be re-written for a higher grade after
completing a conference with Ms. Dee. Once again, writing is a main component of this course. Students will
be working towards improving their writing prociency throughout the year. This will require peer evaluations,
writing conferences, re-writes, and self-reection in the form of a portfolio.

Academic Integrity...
If you copy work from someone else (including the internet) or let someone copy your work, you will receive a
zero for the assignment as well as any other appropriate consequences. For summative assessments, the violation
will be reported to the administration and the assignment will need to be re-done with a consequence given
towards the overall grade (partial credit).

If you are absent...
Check the Extras bin or center table for any materials from the day you were absent
Be sure to ask Ms. Dee any questions about missed assignments.
Absent students will be allowed to make up any missing work, projects, quizzes, or tests in a timely matter
(about 24 hours). Please see me to schedule a time to make up missing quizzes or tests.
If you miss class due to a eld trip or other school related activity, it is your responsibility to turn any work that
would be due in class that day. Work will be considered late if not turned in.

Technology Policy
Technology that has been provided by the school (iPad) and personal technology can be very benecial to the
learning environment when used properly. There will be opportunities in class to use technology to support
learning. These times will be designated by the teacher. Whenever technology is not being used for academic
purposes (as directed by the teacher), students are expected to have any technology, including iPads and cell
phones, placed out of sight (pocket, back-pack). Warnings will be given, followed by the device being taken away
for the class period if warnings are not complied with.

For the safety of any devices, I highly encourage students to keep any devices in a safe place when not needed
for class. This discourages use outside of academic purposes and keeps the device safe. I will make every effort
to inform you the day before if technology will be used in class.
