Student Teacher: Amalia Stratikopoulos Stage: S1 Lesson Duration: 1hr Lesson Number: 6

Outcomes & Indicators:

ST1-10LW: Describes external features, changes in and growth of living things
identifies and recongises different groups of animals - mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish and insects.
compares the appearance of adult living things with their offspring, e.g. mammals, reptiles, birds and insects
records the changes in growth of a common animals, by identify the life cycle
ST1-4WS: Investigates questions and predictions by collecting and recording data, sharing and reflecting on their
experiences and comparing what they and others know
working cooperatively and individually when participating in different types of guided investigations to explore and answer
questions, such as identifying life cycles and investigating in the chicken hatching program.
Key Scientific Knowledge:
Teachers should have prior knowledge and
understanding of:
Classifying animal groups (mammals, reptiles,
amphibians, birds, fish and insects) (Wilcox &
Sterling, 2008).
Life cycles of humans (Froschauer, 2013).
Life cycle of animals that are being explored and
used within the animal packs e.g. Crocodiles: lay
eggs, hatches into baby crocs and grows into adult
croc. (Keeley, 2010).
Life cycle of chickens hens, hen has the egg
inside them, the hen lays eggs, hen roosts the egg,
hatch into baby chicks and grow into hens or
roosters (Froschauer, 2013).

HSIE: CCS1.2: Identifies changes and continuities in their own life and in the local community.
describes people at different stages of their life
English: EN1-1A: Communicates with a range of people in informal and guided activities demonstrating interaction skills and
considers how own communication is adjusted in different situations
speaking and presenting to class, using clear and confident oral speaking skills
listen for specific purposes and information, including instructions, and extend students' own and others' ideas in
discussions
Activity Title: Exploring Life cycles & Introduction to Chicken Hatching Program
Lesson Sequence:
Introduction (10-15min):
*children revisits plant journals observe and record findings
teacher recaps prior learning - classifying different animal groups (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish and insects)
teacher re-introduces the concept of life cycles by identifying the life cycle of humans e.g. this is the life cycle for people (humans)just like we have a
lifecycle, well so do animals...lets explore and investigate...teacher introduces life cycle of animals, giving an example for each of the different animal groups -
using IWB briefly comparing adult appearance with their offsprings. please see Weebly Website
Body (30-40min):
*Activity: in groups, children will be given an animal pack that they need to complete by cooperatively working together and problem solve, in order to identify the life
cycle of their specific animal. please see Appendix 3
teacher note: Each animal pack will attain a different animal and be from one of the six animal groups previously explored.
*Class presentation: children, once identified/worked the animals life cycle, will present their data in front of class
*when presenting, children need to: (1) name the animal (e.g. this animal is a crocodile), (2) state what animal group their animal is from (e.g. its a reptile) and (3) its
life cycle (e.g. it lays eggs)
Conclusion (15-20min):
*class discussion identifying and recognising that there are many different life cycles of living things.
Interactive activities please see Weebly Website
teacher to focus on one of the animal packs chickens, recapping on identifying its animal group and life cycle. teacher briefly explains that children will be
participating in a chicken hatching program that will focus, in-depth, on the life cycle of chickens. The program investigation will run for approximately two weeks
and will actively involve children to: observe, take photos, document, record, take responsibility and monitor the growth of chickens.
