Formative Evaluations

One-to-One / Small Group / Field Trial

Lesson 1 3

One-to-One Evaluations

1. The purpose of the one-to-one evaluation was to acquire feedback for learner
in order to assess the clarity and effectiveness of instruction.
2. The reviewers name is Maria. She is a first year student at Laredo Beauty
College and has limited experience in shampooing hair. The reviewer hopes to
someday work at a fast paced salon or even own one. Her educational
background includes a high school diploma. This learner was chosen because she
shares characteristics that are representative of the student body at this beauty
school. Most of the learners attending this school share this students
motivation, ability and knowledge.
3. The one-to-one evaluations for each of the lessons took place at the beauty
school in an unused office. The office was equipped with a computer with
Microsoft PowerPoint and internet access. I explained the purpose of the
evaluation to Maria and that I was there to answer questions.
4. The learner stated that she had no difficulty completing any of the activities
and that her confidence has increased. She also stated that the activities were
appropriate for first year beauty college students.
5. I was expecting more feedback from reviewer. Her feedback nonetheless was
valuable and I thanked her for it.
6. The single reviewer had no suggestions to support any revision of instructional
material so I proceeded to make arrangements for small group evaluation.

Small Group Evaluation

1. The purpose of the small group evaluation is to verify the results of the one-to-
one evaluation and access the clarity and effectiveness of instruction.
2. The small group was made of up 9 first time beauty college students. Eight
were female and one was male. These learners were between 18 and 32 years of
age. They were chosen because they share characteristics that are representative
of the student body at this beauty school. All of them have a high school
diploma, previous hair styling experience, and express a desire work at a salon
upon state certification.
3. Evaluation was done in a classroom at the beauty college that was equipped
with a computer running Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and internet access. The
room also had a projector.
4. The reviewers commented on several areas of the project. The felt the video
sequences needed narration. They also commented that the flash video was too
small to see clearly. The reviewers also felt that the rubric needed revision. All
reviewers felt the instructions were clear and easy to follow.
5. I was delighted to hear the positive feedback after getting few comments from
one-to-one session. I was somewhat surprised to hear that the videos were too
small.
6. I decided to adopt all the recommendations. The flash video was increased to
640x480 and the requested narration was added. I also adjusted the rubric.

Field Trial

1. The purpose of the field trials was to verify the effectiveness of revisions from
the previous evaluation.
2. A small group of 30 students participated at in the trials. There were two
classes of 15 each. Since both classes were on the same day and no changes were
made in between classes, I considered this 1 field trial. For the purpose of this
field trial both classes will be reviewed as one. The learners consisted of 28
females and two males. All learners were in their first semester at the beauty
college and had a high school diploma or GED. Their ages were from 18 to 34.
The instructor has been teaching the course for 12 years and was a former beauty
college student.
3. The field trials were held in a classroom equipped with a computer running
Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and internet access. The room also had a projector.
Each class used the same 15 student and one instructors guide.
4. Learners found the instructions simple to follow and the flash video size was
adequate. Instructor appreciated the change to the rubric and said she liked the
structured feel to the lessons. Lastly, the instructor also felt that the PowerPoint
presentation should be narrated completely to make it easier for the students to
follow the lessons. She said this would also allow other instructors to teach the
class without resorting to textbooks, manuals, or notes.
5. I was surprised to hear that the instructor wanted the complete PowerPoint
presentation narrated because I didnt feel it needed it. I felt the instruction was
already simple to follow and the learners had the student guide to aid them.
6. I complied with the request to narrate the entire PowerPoint presentation and
proceeded to make plans for the summative evaluation.

Summative Evaluations

Although there was not enough time to perform summative evaluations by the
end of class, they are scheduled to be performed in early September. The format
and student profiles will be similar to the field trial.

1. The purpose of the summative evaluation is to verify the effectiveness of the
instruction.
2. Fifteen students will be used. The learners are first semester beauty college
students. They will all have a high school diploma or GED. They will be between
the ages of 18 and 38. They are all seeking to work in a salon setting after
graduation from beauty school. The instructor has been teaching the course for
12 years and was a former beauty college student.
3. The field trials will be held in a classroom equipped with a computer running
Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and internet access. The room also has a projector.
Each class used the same 15 student and one instructors guide.
