HALLOWEEN ACROSTIC POEM NAME: ____________________________________________ Period:________

Read ALL these directions before you begin, and use these directions as a checklist when finished.
_____ Use each letter in the word Halloween to start a new line of detailed IMAGERY describing things* related to Halloween.
_____ *HINT: Start by listing 9 or more things about Halloween that you will describe, instead of trying to tell a story. Describe each
thing in a way that makes the reader see it, hear it, smell it, taste it, or feel what it feels like when touched or it touches you.
FOR EXAMPLE: Low fog creeping among skeleton-like trees (makes you see it sight imagery)
(For the letter L: Low and creeping describes fog in an eerie tone; skeleton-like describes trees without leaves.)
_____ Use one consistent TONE throughout (For example, either scary/eerie, or happy, or funny, etc., for the entire poem)
______ The last line should be used as a conclusion (wrap-up) for the entire poem, more so than trying to describe something in it.
_____ Keep lines a similar length throughout the poem and fairly short (less than 10 words), so choose descriptive words carefully.
______Complete sentences are NOT necessary and NOT recommended in this type of poem.
_____ Beside each of the 5 physical senses, list the letter(s) for the line(s) describing something in that kind of imagery:
Sight imagery (see it): ________________; Sound imagery (hear it): ________________; Imagery of touch (feel it) ______________
Imagery of taste (taste it): ______________; Imagery of smell (smell it): ________________
_____ You MUST use imagery that appeals to each of the 5 physical senses at least one time each.
_____ Dont forget to check for correct spelling!

For an OVERALL EXAMPLE of a complete acrostic imagery poem, here is short one about FALL.
Notice the underlined words being described by the words in italics!
Fog sits low as the bright morning sun rises (sight imagery)
And slowly melts the frosty chill in the air; (imagery of touch/feel)
Leaves leisurely drift, like my thoughts (sight imagery)
Lingering on nostalgic memories of times past. (conclusion)

PREWRITING / BRAINSTORMING: List 9 or more things related to Halloween that you intend to
describe (in the same tone). Remember, the things youll describe do NOT have to begin with the letters in
Halloween because they will not necessarily be the first word in the line. (For example, in the directions above I
described fog (in an eerie tone) in a line beginning with the letter L.)
