Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 7. EARLY CHILDHOOD FIELD EXPERIENCES
Candidates have field experiences and clinical practice in a) at least two of the three early childhood age
groups (birth-age 3, 3 through 5, 5 through 8 years) and in b) the variety of settings that offer early
education (early school grades, child care centers and homes, Head Start programs).
(NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:
During the summer semester of 2014 for my ECED 243, Cognitive Curriculum class, I completed an
Invitation to Learn. I paired an animal kit with play-doh and washable paint to encourage the kids to take
interest in the invitation. I chose to set the invitation up on the long lunch table where 6-8 children could
participate at once. I have found play and exploration is deeper when there are more participants and a variety
of ages. There were 3 children participating age group 0-3, and 4 children participating in age group 3-5.
I placed all of the supplies for writing, painting and measuring together so the kids could see they had choices. I
placed part of the rainforest animals behind the paint so the kids knew they could be used together and the other
half next to the play-doh to encourage them to use those together as well. I placed the books to the right and
away from any messy supplies so they could see they should keep them separate. The children, in two
different age groups were able to explore science, math, reading, arts/crafts, and writing with this
activity.
Analysis of What I Learned:
Through this project I was able to watch as the older kids mentored the young children. The children in the
age group 0-3 would often imitate what they saw the children 3-5 testing. I saw they explored and created
for a much longer time span than if I had made this part of a structured lesson plan. They accessed a variety of
tools to see what kind of prints and colors could be made on the play doh, as well as the paper. They knew how
to manipulate the set-up, what the expectation was, and were not limited with specific instructions. The
conversation occurring between the children allowed me an opportunity to ask open ended questions to deepen
their knowledge of the rainforest and what they might find.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
Using Reggio Emilia approach, I was able to create an invitation for children of a wide age range. This
particular group consisted of 3 children age 0-3 and 4 children age 3-5 which encompasses two of the three
early childhood age groups. I observed a similar approach while visiting a home daycare, Playtime in my
area. I use the Reggio Emilia approach regularly in my home daycare. Although I did not see the teachers at
YMCA Appletree use the Reggio Emilia approach during my observations, I was able to visit a 4 year old
classroom and an infant room. This also meets the requirement for working with two of the three early
childhood age groups in a variety of settings.
