Tiered Lesson (Differentiated by Readiness)

Sally Mableson 2096106

Lesson Topic:

Seasonal changes

Curriculum Area: Science

Year Level:

Foundation - year 1

Description of Unit: BIG idea

This science unit will explore the daily and seasonal changes in our environment, including
the weather, affect everyday life by exploring and observing the world using the senses.

Learning Objectives: As a result of engaging with the lesson students will:

Understand
Students will understand that the weather is constantly changing, which has effect on their
everyday life.
Students will understand that observation is an important part of exploring and
investigating the things and places around us

Know
Students will know the simple vocabulary
that is involved in describing the weather
e.g. hot, cold, raining, cloudy

Be Able To
Students will be able to look at the weather
to determine what kinds of activities and
clothing should be worn.

Student will know some typical weather

patterns of the Australian environment.

Students will be able to make simple

inferences based on observations they
have made of the weather.

Essential Questions:

Where are some places you can find out what the weather will be?
How might the weather affect different types of people?
Other than clothes what are some other ways that you can warm up or cool down?

Lesson Title: What should we wear to suit the weather?

Pre Assessment of students readiness:
At the end of the previous lesson students have been given an exit card (see Appendix 1) to
gain insight of what each individual student knows about the weather. They are to identify
what it looks like when it is raining, hot and cloudy. There is also an question that will
require an extended answer of their knowledge of why the weather makes us wear
different clothes. The exit card will help to determine what the students know about the
weather and determine which tier they would best suited to in terms of their readiness to
learn.
Tier 1:
This group will involve students who have very little or no understanding of weather
concepts. This tier involves a closed activity and addresses the key fundamentals of the
weather.
Tier 2:
Students will be able to show a range of understanding of different weather types. The
activity involves both open ended and closed questioning.
Tier 3:
Students will show a deep understanding of a range of different weather types and have
knowledge of weather appropriate clothing. They should also be able to explain how the
weather affects the way we dress, to be able to complete the activity which involves open
ended questioning.

Lesson Plan:
Lesson Sequence
Introduction
1. Whole class introduction with students
sitting on the floor
revising what is weather and common
weather types
2. Students will be split into their
predetermined tiered groups.

Group A (tier 1): Appendix 2

Students are told what the weather is

mins

Explanatory Notes
Introduction
Weather is all around us
and it is an important part
of our lives
We cannot change the
weather however there
are certain things we do
because of the weather,
Today we are going to look
at different types of
weather like dress
differently.
Group A:

in the two scenes

o E.g. it is raining! What clothes
are you going to wear?
They will then need to glue the clothes
given and stick them onto the
appropriate scene

15-20
mins

Equipment:
scissors
glue
coloured pencils
Students will need to link to given
clothes to the scenes given

Group B (tier 2) : Appendix 3

Students will be required to link the
pictures of the weather forecast of
sunny, cloudy or rainy with the 3
scenes given.
They are also required to draw a
picture of themselves in the cloths
they should wear for the weather
given in each scene

Group B:
Equipment:
scissors
glue
coloured pencils

Group C (tier 3): Appendix 4

Students will be required to give the
weather forecast of the three scenes
given.
They will also be required to draw a
picture of themselves in the cloths
they should wear for the weather
given in each scene

Group C:
Equipment:
scissors
Coloured pencils

Introduce the three weather

types they will need to be looking
at e.g. raining, sunny, cloudy
before they start
