Top Tips for BMAT Success

Content review: Section 2 of the BMAT tests Scientific Knowledge and Application.

This section is centred around the Double Science and Higher Mathematics at Key
Stage 4 curriculum. In order to do as well as possible in this section of the BMAT, you
need to be able to recall and use the knowledge quickly and easily in the test.
Mental Arithmetic: Calculators are not permitted in the BMAT. Practise doing simple

calculations in your head (decimals, percentages, fractions etc.) to ensure that you
dont waste valuable time on Test Day.
Triage Questions: All questions on the BMAT have the same points value. There-

fore, work your way through the test doing the easy questions, and questions that you
know how to tackle first. You can then go back to the questions that are longer or
trickier, once you have claimed the easy points.
Dont leave any questions blank: You

wont lose any marks if you choose the

wrong answer, so its worth guessing the
answer to any questions that youre not
sure about. Try eliminating a couple of the
answer choices first, for better odds of
guessing correctly.

Practise writing concisely: You will only have 1 side of A4 paper on which to write

your essay for section 3 of the BMAT. Practise writing clearly and concisely to ensure
that you dont go over a page in length.
Take time to plan the essay: You will have 30 minutes to complete section 3 of the

BMAT. This is more than enough time to write a side of A4 paper, therefore, you
should spend the first 10 minutes planning the essay, and the remaining 20 minutes
writing the essay.
Practise, practise, practise: The more you practise, the more familiar you will be

with the multiple-choice format and style of the questions on the BMAT.
Allow enough time for preparation: The BMAT is an important test. Allow enough

time for your preparation, and ensure you have a good nights sleep before test day
so you can approach the test feeling well rested and confident.

Kaplan runs 2-day BMAT preparation courses which include 5 full-length practice tests.
