Matters arising from the previous minutes:

Non-Uniform Days:
Mr Fish read out extracts from a letter received from Diabetes UK, thanking the members of the school
community for donating 941.33 and so helping towards a better future for children with diabetes. Mr
Fish will scan the certificate, and ask for it to be put in the Newsletter and onto the School Website.

Mr Fish repeated the Senates wishes to hold the following Non-Uniform Days in 2013/14:

Friday 18 Oct 2013 Coaching for Hope
Coaching for Hope is an innovative programme which uses football to create better futures for young
people in West and Southern Africa. Harry Barker, one of Norwich City's Under-21s and former Thorpe St
Andrew School student, spent some time in South Africa and has been in school on many occasions
promoting the work of the charity. We are intending to host a football tournament in school to raise
extra funds for the charity. Interested students should contact Mr Fish in school.

Friday 28 Feb 2014 EACH (East Anglian Children's Hospices)
Quidenham is a hospice for children to be cared for out of hospital when they are critically/ terminally ill.
The non-uniform day fundraiser builds on the achievements of the 'Ladies Day' event held last year which
was organised by students and staff from the Health and Social Care department.

Friday 9 May 2014 East Anglian Air Ambulance
This charity is a 365 day-a-year lifesaving service across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Peterborough,
Norfolk and Suffolk. Since the Charitys launch in 2000, the dedicated, highly skilled medical crews on the
specially-equipped helicopters have helped to save the lives of hundreds of people unfortunate enough to

be involved in accidents or medical emergencies in this region. To continue this critical work, the charity
needs to raise 7.6 million every year.

Edwards & Blake Catering Survey:
Mr Fish stated that the results were quite mixed, and the questionnaires will be forwarded to the catering
company for further analysis.

School Uniform:
There were many issues raised with the school uniform, such as the quality of the clothing, hoodies, how
its worn and how its enforced by members of staff. First of all, Mrs Veeren proposed the question of
whether we liked the school uniform; this gave mixed responses, some saying yes and some saying no. One
of the issues we had with the uniform was that not everyone wears the same, therefore when students
start wearing a more fashionable item of clothing, everyone wears it, so we suggested making rules that
only being able to wear those specific items, which means everyone would wear the same. As the school
wants us to look smart, we discussed whether blazers, shirts and ties would be a good idea because some
of us felt that the polo shirts and jumpers could possibly suggest a more casual look. However, the
majority of people said ties would cause problems with the younger age groups. Also, some people
suggested whether looking smart for school was actually necessary. The issue of hoodies was raised with
the question what is actually wrong with them?, we discussed this question and came to the conclusion
that they have negative connotations. We also discussed whether in Summer, boys would be allowed to
wear shorts as some felt it is sometimes too hot to be wearing trousers. Lastly, we discussed how uniform
is enforced upon students. Overall, we felt that teachers were only strict on it at certain times, but in order
for it to be successful, it needs to be a constant enforcement. We also said that all of the teachers need to
implement the same rules to all of the students, so there is no confusion.
