Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Summary/ Theme

Timeline & Cite & Analyze Timeline Instructions

Assignment: Students will create a Summary/ Theme timeline
and a Cite & Analyze Timeline based on the first Chapter of
Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Student Learning Objectives:
At the end of this unit, students will be able to cite and analyze
texts while reviewing small excerpts with 80% accuracy.
At the end of this unit, students will be able to correctly identify
and interpret themes while reading excerpts and responding to
them 4 out of 5 times, as well as provide an objective summary.
Directions:
1. Go to the website http://www.online-literature.com/carroll/alice/1/ and read the first Chapter of Alice's
Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.
2. Go to the Unit Plan website http://thegreatnessofgatsby.weebly.com/lesson-3-graphic-organizer.html
and open up the Word Document entitled Timeline. You will notice that the timeline has 12 blocks. To
fill in a "block," simply click on it and you will be able to type.
Summary/ Theme Timeline Directions:
3. Complete at least seven of the "blocks" by objectively summarizing the first Chapter. Simply type one
sentence per block/ summary that summarizes the Chapter chronologically (you will end up with at least 7
one-sentence chronological summaries). Keep it short and use your own words. If you need help with
writing the objective summaries, feel free to visit the following links from the your Webercise:

4. While writing your mini-summaries, identify at least three themes you see beginning to occur. Simply
state "A theme here could be..." in a block and move onto the next block. Keep themes and summaries in
separate blocks.
5. An example would be to fill out three "blocks" with summaries, then one "block" with a theme and
repeat. However, you do not need to do it in this order. You can choose how many blocks you use to
write summaries/ themes, however, you need at least 3 themes, 7 summaries, and you need to fill out ALL
12 blocks. So, once you have completed at least 3 themes and 7 summaries, make sure you fill in 2 more
blocks so that all 12 are complete.

6. When you have filled out all 12 "blocks," and successfully summarized the first Chapter of the story,
save your document (I highly recommend saving as you go!).
Cite & Analyze Timeline Directions:
7. Scroll down to the second page of the Timeline Word Document and you will see another 12 block
summary.
8. Begin the first block by citing a short line that you think is pertinent to the passage, Alice's character,
Wonderland, or any themes you've seen so far. Normally, citations are accompanied by an author's last
name and page/ line number. However, since there are no page numbers on the Internet reading, do not
worry about this right now.
9. In the second block, briefly analyze why this citation is pertinent.
10. Repeat steps 7 & 8 until all 12 blocks are completed. You will end up with 6 citations and 6
comments analyzing the importance of these citations.
11. When you have filled out all 12 blocks with alternating citations and comments analyzing them, save
your document, print it out, and bring it to class by November 21, 2014.
