Lesson Plan Title: Ten Frame Count

Lesson Plan Topic: Mathematics

Location: Doral Academy

Date: 11/6/14

1. Standards/Objectives:
K.cc.3- I can write numbers from 0-20
K.cc.4a K.cc.4b K.cc.4c- I can count one by one in order and say how many objects I counted
K.cc.5- I can count to 20 in different ways (in a line, rectangle array, or circle)
K.NBT- I can build and break apart numbers from 11-19 into ten ones and ones.
2. Teaching Model: Co-teaching (one teach one observe)
-whole group with individualized small group instruction
3. Objectives: Kindergarten students will be able to count to 20 by using a ten frame. Students will
be able to identify they have the 10 from the ten frame and count on given they know how to
count to 20 and can break apart numbers by tens and one with 90% accuracy.
4. Materials Needed: -ten frames (50) 2 per student
-Spinners
-buttons/cups with no more than 20 buttons in each cup
-2 worksheets (numbers 13,14) 25 copies of each
5. Procedures: -Have students sit as whole group on carpet in the math room *LEMOV STRATEGY
(THRESHOLD- meet and greet your students every day at the door to welcome them into the
room) Hand students ten frames and welcome them into the lesson/room
-T: Today we are going to keep counting! One of the things that I love about a ten frame is that
it really helps me keep track of my counting!
-I KNOW if I fill in one of these ten frames then I have 10!
-Demonstrate as partners with Mrs. Glover
-Me: Spin the wheel-(lands on 14) count out 14 buttons from the cup.
-Mrs.Glover: will put 10 buttons on the ten frame and four buttons on the other frame. Count
out loud to make sure it is the right amount (tap on the ten frame and say 10) then continue
onto the other frame 11, 12, 13, 14)
-Take turns with partners (demonstrate this to the students)
-Complete this activity for 10 minutes
-Mrs. Glover and I will be walking around to check for understanding and have students
demonstrate their activity for us
-Partners will return to desk where the worksheets will be previously placed
-Show how to do the worksheet on the projector as a class and go over instruction
-Based off of assessment during observation-pull small group of students that are struggling
with ten frames and continue to work and practice with these students
-At the end of the worksheets, come back together as a class and ask students to share what
they learned about ten frames (how it helps them etc.)

-Have students talk with other students at the table to share how their worksheets are the same
or different
6. Modification/Accommodations: When pairing students up, pair up a high and low student to
ensure the low students are getting help. Pull small group of students that are struggling with
the concept and continue to work with them showing how to use the ten frames and how to
count past ten.
7. Homework: None- objectives will be met during class instruction.
8. Summative Assessment: QSI testing can be done at the end of the quarter to see if students can
count by 10s, past 10 and break apart numbers into ten and ones (QSI testing will be completed
at the end of November)
Formative Assessment: Observation during partner work. Have students demonstrate and count
using the ten frames. Keep a class list of students name and mark a check mark or minus next to
the students name based off of understanding. *LEMOV STRATEGY* (check for understandingkeep a class list and make a check or minus next to their name if they are understanding or
need to be retaught)
9. Extension- students may get another ten frame with more buttons, they can fill up the first two
ten frames representing 20 and continue to count on the third frame as 21, 22, 23 etc.
