C1G system overview

The Casa Systems C1G Cable Modem Termination System CMTS) is a new class of
cable edge device that combines a third generation DOCSIS CMTS and IPTVdevice
that allows cable operators to deliver digital video services over an economical and
compact platform. Cable ISPs can remotely deploy the C1G in distributed locations
(such as apartment towers) with Layer-2 switching capability on top of DOCSIS 3.0 to
provide data and IPTV services.

C1G chassis

Network capabilities
The C1G consists of a base system with one DOCSIS MAC interface consisting of
one downstream DQM QAM and up to two upstream DCU interfaces.
The single DOCSIS QAM interface provides DOCSIS packet processing and QoS,
DOCSIS downstream MAC, PHY, and RF up-conversion over 8 channels using one
physical output port. The single DOCSIS Control and Upstream (DCU) interface
includes DOCSIS packet processing, DOCSIS upstream MAC, and burst mode
receivers over 4 channels per each physical port (2).
A standard configuration for channel bonded deployment can be utilizing both
upstream channels and the single downstream channel, 8DSx8US for a 1:1 channel
ratio for up to 400 Mbps downstream bandwidth in Annex A.
For complete information on the C1G features and capabilities, see the Casa Systems
C1G CMTS Data Sheet.

openings at the rear of the chassis.

Console and network interfaces

C1G network interfaces (Figure 1-1 and Figure 1-2) provide Layer 3 packet routing
and forwarding as well as system management functionality using the following
components:

Up to two GigE (G0 and G1) ports to accept and transmit video streams in the
form of MPEG2 transport streams from a video-on-demand (VoD) server or from
IP networks. The port uses an industry-standard small form-factor pluggable
(SFP) module for either fiber or copper interface cabling.

RS-232 local console serial I/O port (RJ45 connector)

DOCSIS MAC interface

The DOCSIS QAM interface (DQM) supports DOCSIS packet processing, QoS,
DOCSIS downstream MAC, PHY, and RF up conversion, serving as the RF
downstream interface between the cable headend and DOCSIS-based cable modems.
The DQM interface is a single interface that supports 8 QAM channels.
The DOCSIS Control & Upstream (DCU) interface supports RF burst receiving,
signal demodulation, DOCSIS upstream MAC, PHY, as well as packet processing and
QoS, serving as the RF upstream interface between the cable headend and

Installing the optional wall mount

Installing the optional wall mount

Casa provides a C1G wall mounting option for installations where a computer rack is
not readily available or feasible, or if the installation space is limited. The C1G wall
mounting components attach to any flat wall surface. Since the system is mounted
flush (similar to hanging a picture on a wall) with approximately 0.30 inches of
clearance between the unit and the wall, you only need to ensure adequate mounting
points and a surface area large enough for the system and the system cabling.
There are currently two wall mounting options:
1.

The standard wall mount kit, and

2.

The standard wall mount with a remote standalone dual power module holder. See
Using the standalone dual power module pocket.

Figures 2-4 illustrate the wall mount bracket installation.

Figure 2-4.

C1G wall mount bracket installation

Using three screws, attach the right-angle rack

mounting brackets to the C1G; attach one on the
right and one on the left.

To mount, you will need a level, power drill and bits,

mounting bolts or screws, appropriately-sized washers,
and wall anchors for the type of wall at your installation location.
Casa does not include this hardware due to the many variations
available for differing types of wall construction.

Connecting the Gigabit Ethernet ports

Connecting the Gigabit Ethernet ports

The network uplink connections are made through the GigE Ethernet (GigE) ports.
The GigE ports labeled G0 and G1 support IEEE 802.3z and IEEE 802.3ab
specifications for 1000BASE-T/-X (1000 Mbps) transmission over fiber-optic cables
and standard CAT5/CAT6 cables. These ports also support auto-sensing and
auto-negotiation of the proper transmission mode (half duplex or full duplex) with an
attached device.
GigE port G0 uses an SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) module.

Installing SFP modules

The GigE ports labeled G0 and G1 require the insertion of an SFP module (SFP-CP
copper or SFP-LC fiber), as illustrated in Figure 3-1. The following warning applies to
fiber-optic SFPs.
Warning: Invisible laser radiation may be emitted from disconnected

fibers or connectors. Do not stare into beams or view directly with optical
instruments.

Figure 3-1.

Sample SFP module

To insert an SFP module into port GigE G0:

3-3

Connecting the Gigabit Ethernet ports

1.

For optical SFP modules, locate the transmit (TX) and the receive (RX) markings
that identify the topside of the SFP module.

Note: On some modules, the TX and RX markings might be replaced by

arrowheads. These point out of the module connector to signify the transmit
direction, and into the connector to indicate the receive direction.
2.

Align the back (receive) end of the SFP module with the front faceplate, then
insert the module into the G0 port until you feel the connector snap into place.

3.

Remove the dust plugs from the optical ports, and store them for later use.

Connecting Ethernet to the SFP

To connect Ethernet cables to the SFPs in ports G0 and G1, insert the Ethernet cable
into the front (transmit) end of the SFP module, as illustrated in Figure 3-2.

Removing Ethernet cables and the SFP module

To remove an SFP module:
1.

Remove the cable from the front end of the SFP module in G0 or G1. To release
the lock on the SFP, pull the SFP module release lever down until it stops.

2.

Slide the module out of the receptacle.

Replace the dust plugs on the optical ports for protection.

Connecting to the console port

The console port provides local administrative access to the C1G and the
command-line interface (CLI) over a serial EIA-561 RS232D connection with a DTE
interface using a male RJ-45 plug. Attaching a terminal or PC allows you to connect to
the system CLI for initial setup at the deployed location.
To connect a terminal or PC to the RJ-45 console port, you need a DB-9 to DB-9 serial
crossover cable and the supplied RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter.
Figure 3-3 illustrates the RJ-45 and lists the pin/signal information.

Connecting the RF I/O ports

Connecting the RF I/O ports

Connect the RF I/O upstream and downstream ports to the HFC network, as illustrated
in Figure 3-5:
1.

Attach the 75-ohm F-connector on one end of the cable to the RF connector on the
faceplate of RF I/O module.

2.

Attach the other end of the cable to the equipment that acts as a gateway to the
HFC network, using the appropriate type of connector for your HFC distribution
equipment.

Caution: When connecting the cable F-connector to the RF connector

on the RF I/O module, ALWAYS use a torque wrench to set the tightness
to 15 inch-lbs (1.7 Newton-meters) Do not simply hand-tighten the
F-connectors. F-connectors that are too loose can cause RF leakage.
F-connectors that are too tight can damage the RF port electronics.
