Course Title: English II - Reading

Grade 8th

Unit: Literature

Specific Topic: Dr. Seuss

Competence:
Knows and recognizes the children's book author Dr. Seuss and his literary works in a variety of context by
reading the poem "Oh, the places you will go" and writing a paragraph about it.
Rationale:
Many authors have tried to inspire as well as to teach young people. By promoting their literature, we help
our students know these authors and engage them into reading their works.
Lesson Content:
Information about Dr. Seuss, literary works, small biography, and poem "Oh the places you will go".

TIME
Instructional Procedures
a.

Warm-up
Teacher divides the class into three groups. One of the student is given a vocabulary word to mime.
Group members try to guess the meaning.

b. Teaching procedures
Presentation:
1. Teacher asks if anyone has heard about Dr. Seuss
2. Teacher hands over students a sheet of paper with information about Dr Seuss.
3. Ss read the information.
4. Teacher explains about Dr. Seuss and his life.

Controlled practice:
1. Students gather into groups of four.
2. Teacher hands over to each group the book by Dr. Seuss "Oh, the Places You'll Go"
3. Students take turns reading out loud each paragraph of the poem.

Semi controlled practice:


1. Teacher hands over to each group a sheet of paper
2. Students are prompted to write down any word or phrase that is not understood.
3. Students discuss in their group the possible meaning of the phrase of word and write it down.
(Consciousness-raising)
4. Students share with their peers their findings.

Free practice:
1. Teacher hands over each student a sheet of paper.
2. Students write a paragraph of 100 words about the poem they read.
3. Students turn in their paragraph to the teacher.

1. Each group of students share their favorite paragraph and explain why they liked it to the rest of
the class.

1. Teacher explains any word of phrase the students didn't understood.
