Neuroscience
In a famous study Caucasion participants
were exposed to faces of both African
Americans (outgroup) and Caucasions
(ingroup)
Amygdala and two areas of the cortext
were activated when outgroup faces were
shown
The amygdala is responsible for processing
and regulating emotion
The cortex is responsible for producing
rational responses

Image 4

Neuroscience
continued
Activity in the amygdala was
reduced the longer the outgroup
faces were shown. In contrast,
activity in the cortex was increased
the longer these faces were shown
This suggests that we react less
emotionally and more rationally
the longer we are exposed to
members of outgroups

Evolution of prejudice: Prejudice is hardwired into the human brain

Image 7
Image 7

Categorization
Prejudice is the result of our
minds attempt to make the
world around us easier to
understand
One ways that we do this is
categorization
Image 8

Categorization
continued
When we lump items or people together
based on perceived similarities and
differences
Simplifies our thinking
We do this in our everyday lives to make
sense of the world around us
For example, pharmacists keep track of
medicines they distribute by using categories
such as painkillers and cough suppressants.
