Class content for the 2nd quarter

Math:
Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit numbers.
Use place value understanding and properties to perform multi-digit arithmetic.
Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from larger units to
smaller units.
Geometric measurement involving angles.
Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.
Build fractions by applying and extending prior understanding of operations of whole
numbers.
Literacy:
Read informational/fictional text Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology,
comparison, cause/effect, and problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or
information in a text or part of a text.
Interpret information presented in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or
interactive elements. Explain how the information contributes to an understanding of
the text in which it appears.
Make connections between a text, story or drama and a visual or oral presentation identifying
the difference in details.
Compare and contrast the themes and topic in stories, myths and traditional literature from
different cultures
Compose and edit research papers.
Summarize portions of text.
Engage in collaborative discussions about text.
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when
writing or speaking.
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation,
and spelling when writing.

Science:

Compare the physical properties of samples of matter (strength, hardness, flexibility, ability
to conduct heat, ability to conduct electricity, ability to be attracted by magnets, reactions to
water and fire).
Explain how minerals are identified using tests for the physical properties of hardness, color,
luster, cleavage and streak.

Compare fossils (including molds, casts, and preserved parts of plants and animals) to one
another and to living organisms.
Infer ideas about Earths early environments from fossils of plants and animals that lived
long ago.
Give examples of how the surface of the earth changes due to slow processes such as erosion
and weathering and rapid processes such as landslides, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Social Studies:

Explain how different cultures, beliefs, and values can impact the characteristics of a region.
Describe and compare another (African ) culture in NC.
Trace the history of the colonization in NC and the role NC played from pre-colonial through
Reconstruction.
Analyze the NC preamble and constitution in terms of rights and responsibilities
Compare the roles and responsibilities of state leaders
Compare NC government with our local government.

Global Studies:

Compare and contrast African culture to NC.

Look at vocabulary through a global perspective.
Identify different cultural perspectives through science
