EXPRESSION Component 10
Sculpture
Component One: ANALYSIS Students will make distinctions within classes of
natural objects or forms
B. Natural forms are related functionally to their environment
Component Four: MAIN FORMS AND PROPORTIONS Students will perfect
forms and develop more realistic treatments
B. Many shapes are symmetrical
Component 8: UNITY Students will create unity by interrelating the parts of
a composition
Limited colours and materials tighten a composition
Component 10 (ii): SUBJECT MATTER students will develop themes, with an
emphasis on social concerns, based on:
Plants and Animals
D. Sculpture
Continue exploring paper sculpture as a means of making three-dimensional
forms
Explore the possibilities of simple wire sculpture, including bending, twisting,
cutting, looping

#2

Cut 50 tissue paper squares (4x4inch). Gather all materials, enough

for each student to make two tissue paper poppies.
Introduction
Time
Colour Wheel: Introduce complementary colours and ask what
10-15
Remembrance Day colours would be complementary.
Which colours are primary? Which colours are secondary?
What does complement mean?
Students will listen quietly and attentively while the concept is
introduced. Students will raise their hands when answering a
question. Students will work cooperatively and safely with
other students to complete the task.
1. Introduce complementary colours with a colour wheel.
2. Demonstrate the activity. Go over it with the students
step by step before giving them any materials.
60
3. Hand out the materials and assist the students in the
minutes
creation of their poppies.
4. Clean up all materials.
Show the students a pre-made poppy. Begin demonstration.

Colour Wheel: Complementary Colours
minutes
Introduce complementary Colours. Ask the students: What is a
primary colour? What is a secondary Colour? What does
complement mean? From this, what do you think that a
complementary colour is? Show two colours on the colour
wheel that are complementary. (red/green, blue/orange,
yellow/purple) Where do we see colours that are
complementary outside? (poppies, sunsets over an ocean, lady
bug on grass) What does symmetry mean? What kinds of
things in nature are symmetrical? (butterfly, snowflake,
peacock feather, starfish) Is a poppy symmetrical? (not in
nature but ours will be) (1, 4, 8, 10)
Demonstrate the activity. Go over it with the students step by
10-20
step before giving them any materials. Show the students each
minutes
step in detail, (see provided learning resource for picture steps)
1. Take one piece of tissue paper and fold it hot dog style
(length wise) until you have a 2x1 inch rectangle.
2. Fold the same piece of still folded tissue paper again
hamburger style (width wise) until you have a 1x1inch
square
3. Fold the same piece of still folded tissue paper again
diagonally from the open corner so that one short side
of the triangle is mostly open (little folded parts)
4. Cut a round corner starting on the closed end of the
diagonal fold and moving out towards the open side
of the paper to make the curved petals. Prior to
unfolding, your paper should look like a teardrop. TIP:
Prior to cutting, students should show you the
side that they are planning to cut from to ensure
that they are doing it correctly. If you do not cut
from the right side your flower will not work.
5. Unfold the paper, and if done correctly, you should have
a circle with a scalloped edge.

6. Poke a green pipe cleaner through the center of your
tissue paper flower to make the stem
7. Curl the top end of the pipe cleaner to make the poppys
center and so it wont slip off.
Ensure that the students are looking at you at all time. If a
student is not paying attention, immediately bring them back to
the lesson. Tell the students: Make sure to put your listening
ears on and pay attention so you make your flowers beautiful
and proper. Go through each step slowly and meticulously so
each student understands. Do not hand out any materials until
the students have demonstrated they understand the steps.
Answer any questions as they arise. Ask the students: Where
do we see a scalloped edge in nature? Are the colours were
using complementary? Is my poppy symmetrical? Why are our
poppies symmetrical? (1, 4, 10)
Hand out the materials and assist the students in the creation
25
of their poppies.
minutes
Hand out enough materials for one per student, and
then provide the rest to each individual student once
they have successfully completed one poppy and their
workstations are free of scrap materials. TIP: Prior to
cutting their paper, students should show you the side
that they are planning to cut from to ensure that they
are doing it correctly. If you do not cut from the right
side your flower will not work. Students should be cleaning
as they go along to ensure the clean-up time does not take too
long. If a student is having difficulty, perhaps pair them with a
stronger student who understands the steps. Answer any
questions as they arise.
Clean up all unused materials and put poppies in designated
10
area.

Students should not have a lot to clean up because they should

have been cleaning as they go along.
