Date: Fall 2014 Artifact Description: This artifact is a Classroom Management Plan for my future high school band room. The details of the artifact include a comprehensive set of classroom rules, classroom procedures, and plans to incorporate my expectations for the classroom. The Classroom Management Plan also includes crisis procedures, and what I, the teacher, will be doing to be consistently vigilant. I have also included my statement of purpose, which is the basis for the classroom management plan. Wisconsin Teacher Licensure Standard Alignment: This plan best aligns with standard five: Environment: Teachers know how to manage a classroom. The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and selfmotivation. This plan best aligns with standard five because it shows that I am able to be proactive for management in the classroom, both positive and negative. It is evidence of research and observation of many different band classrooms and what has and hasnt worked. I was able to use a template from a website and use my own words and thoughts to create a comprehensive plan. This management plan required mostly reflection, personal experience, and creativity in thinking up plans that would help set students up for success and to think of their overall safety and productivity. I am more experienced in this standard because it helped me have a more guided and intricate way to manage a classroom. A common mistake that I was making was simply improvising classroom management when I would be able to briefly be in front of students. To better understand various behavior situations, I would consult and ask the advice of my cooperating teachers. The teachers would council me on how having a plan for the entire class will make for a smooth transition into having your entire class know what you will expect. I am more competent with the understanding of the reasoning of having and implementing a classroom management plan based on my knowledge from the classroom and from the advice of the teachers that I have collaborated with. UW-Platteville School of Educational Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment: This experience best aligns with KSD2.b. Establishes a culture for learning. The candidate can create a classroom environment that establishes and maintains high expectations for all students to value content of course work, take pride in work by initiating improvements, and help peers This best aligns with this KSD because the guidelines provided in the classroom management plan give an in-depth look at the intricacies of classroom expectations as well as show the importance of having plans that ensure a safe, productive, and stable learning environment. Creating a classroom of rapport and stability starts with having a method to the madness of what you are trying to accomplish with students. The classroom management plan lays out the roots for your classroom in which all students can be grounded and eventually learn to grow from.
I am more competent after this experience because I experimented and creatively
thought up different situations and expectations for my imaginary classroom. I thought of the intricacies of the students, our environment in the band room, and expectations and rules that all can follow and refer to. As I work more with various students, I can see how a classroom management plan is beneficial to the students and to the teacher. Every day is a new day to students and with the new days can bring the same successes as much as the same dilemmas. Secondary KSDs: KSD1.b. Demonstrates knowledge of students KSD 2.c Manages classroom procedures KSD 2.d Manages student behavior What I learned about teaching/learning: I have learned and thought up many different ideas after completing the classroom management plan. As much as I focus on the content area of my lessons, I must always remember that behavior plays into how a lesson and knowledge can be retained. If there is pandemonium in the classroom, the learning process will be halted. If there is no safety, the learning process will be halted. Every student has a different sense of behavior that is either taught or adopted from his or her surroundings or the inner workings of an individual mind. By having a classroom management plan, I am providing a safe, positive, and respectful learning environment for everyone in the classroom. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator: I can understand why it is so difficult for younger teachers to be more vigilant and mindful of classroom management. However, with a classroom management plan, it is a large weight of uncertainty that can be lifted from both the students and teacher. I believe that stating your expectations and following through on your commitment to the students education and safety will increase the retention and desire to foster idealistic values. I will continue to be mindful and progressive in my thoughts of classroom management. Too often the negatives of classroom managements are focused upon and instead I hope to improve by rewarding positive behavior.
