Abortion: Pro-Choice v. Pro-Life

What if one day, you found yourself surprised by an unplanned pregnancy? What would
you do if you came to be in this predicament? Women have faced this situation and overcome it
several different ways. One of the most controversial ways women have overcome unplanned
pregnancy is abortion. There is a debate that has been carried through the previous generation
into ours. Where do you stand? Do you believe that women should have the choice to go through
abortion or do you oppose this and believe they should be forced to conceive the fetus? Women
should have the right to decide for themselves whether or not they will go through with abortion
because it is the mothers choice, childbirth may lead to health issues, and some women have
experienced rape which resulted in the women getting pregnant. Who are we to decide whether
or not the women can go through with this medical procedure?
What is abortion? Abortion is the termination of pregnancy before the embryo or fetus is
able to live outside the uterus. There are several categories of abortions. Among these are
spontaneous abortions, induced abortions, and therapeutic abortions. Spontaneous abortions
usually occur naturally when the mother is injured or has a miscarriage (Abortion 2014).Though
these are accidents and not intentional, they are still considered to be abortions. Induced
abortions, however, do not occur naturally. These are usually administered by a doctor through
the use of drugs, but throughout Americas history, induced abortions have also been performed
in the home with an abundance of unsanitary tools. Therapeutic abortions happen when a mother
is at risk during her pregnancy (Abortion 2014). Though there are many different types of
abortions used for a number of reasons, they are all essentially the termination of embryos before
they leave the womb.

Throughout history, women have struggled to be able to have many freedoms. For
example, the right to vote was incredibly hard to come by, but women fought for it endlessly.
Other rights that women have acquired in the past 150 years are the rights to own property, to
have an equal opportunity for education, to be independent of their husbands, et cetera
(Womens 2014). Before the Roe v. Wade case of 1973, it was illegal to have an abortion in the
United States (Abortion 2014). One woman went to court attempting to get permission to get an
abortion because she was raped, but due to the fact that she did not file a police report, she was
not permitted to receive an abortion. This led to the Roe v. Wade case that resulted in the
Supreme Court passing the law that allowed women to get an abortion without providing a
reason. My point is that women fought for the right to be able to terminate their pregnancy like
they did to have the right to vote and now, we are letting this right slip through our fingers.
Whats next? Is it the write to an education? How long before, as a society, we are back to the
times where women were below men? This is the first step.
Surprisingly, more women die in childbirth than you would think. With all of the
technology that we have gained over the years, I would expect the death rate during childbirth to
be lower. In the United States, the chance of dying in childbirth is 1 in 4,800 (Death 2008). If the
government passes the law that abortion is illegal again, more women will die in childbirth
because they will not be able to go through therapeutic abortions. These are strictly for the sake
of keeping the mother safe and by prohibiting women from getting abortions their chance at life
is immediately lowered. How can we take away these womens hope at surviving their
pregnancies? By limiting these women to just going through with the pregnancy, we are not only
letting the mother die without the help she needs and we are letting the fetus die with her. So, tell
me. What is the point?

As horrible as this truth is, there are also women that have gone through the emotional
and physical trauma of being raped. As a result of this horrid crime, many women have
conceived the child of their attacker. For just one moment, can you put yourself in one of these
womens shoes? Imagine that youre just walking through the city and all of a sudden, youre
pulled to the side where no one can see or hear what is going on. Not only do you have to endure
this terrible act pushed on you by another human being, you also have to go through the birthing
of their child. Would you want to be forced to go through this also? How would you ever escape
the memories of that horrid night when you would see the baby that resulted from it? Some may
argue and say that the woman could just give the child up for adoption, but how would that really
make any difference? Just the acted of birthing the child of the man that harmed you may be
despicable in your mind. This whole controversy of prolife v. prochoice is just an issue of
womens rights. Who is to say that you should have to keep this baby, birth the child, or go
longer than a week knowing it is inside of you? No one should have the right to make that choice
for you.
In conclusion, women should be able to get abortions because it is their decision to, some
health problems require it, and women should not be forced to live with the result of their
traumas. I strongly believe that the ability for a woman to get an abortion is a basic right that
every woman should have. Other people should not people to make that kind of decision for the
woman because it is the womans decision to make. Prohibiting women to get abortions would
be equal to keeping women from voting, owning their own property, and having the ability to be
free sexually. So where do you stand now? Do you believe that women should have the ability to
choose what happens with their body or should the government and other people have the right
to decide that for these women?
