THE EVOLUTION OF PBIS

AT BUNGER

2008
Be a Smartie!
Bunger is full of Smarties, lets point
them out!
Each teacher gives out two Smarties
rolls each day.
Smarties go to any student caught
doing something smart
Does NOT have to be academic

Kick-off
Staff turned in names each day
Morning announcements
mentioned our SMART students
and a list was posted in the office
Eventually scaled back to one a day
Smarties were entered into
drawings each month

Consistency
Use common language when talking
to students. Are you using manners?
or Thanks for being safe.
Model respectful behaviors.
If we want students to respect us, we
need to respect them!

Challenges
We created Smartie inflation
Were being given out for arbitrary
reasons that were not connected to
behavior or academics
Were not always linked with
positive behavior
Were being given out 10 at a time
for things like birthdays

5 to 1: Five positive to one negative
Major/Minor Matrix: Minor
offenses handled in classrooms or
ISS, major offenses handled in the
office.
Safe Seat Procedures: each teacher
has a designated time out area
and a safe seat area with a
partnering teacher. These are for
minor offenses.

Safe Seat: Three Strikes

Strike one: I wont follow classroom rules,
so I go to the timeout area in your room.
Strike two: I return in five minutes, work
for a while and then disrupt again now I
go to the safe seat in a nearby teachers
room.
Strike three: I am still not being successful
in the classroom after or during the safe
seat time. Now I go to ISS.

Safe Seat
Reflections are filled out by students and
returned to the sending teacher.
Keeps students supervised and structures
their time even while in trouble.

Increases instructional time by supporting

students without reinforcing negative
behaviors.
Major incidents involve removing the
student immediately and are handled by
the office.

Bunger Middle School

Counselors meet with

students in the morning
and after school.

Students

are selected based

on numerous data points.
1. Behavior Data- Our Pyramid
2. Staff Referral/Nomination Forms
3. Parent Request
4. For data collection to be used w/
another intervention

Get the sheet signed by ALL teacherseven if you

have a bad day or period, it is still important to get
the sheet signed.
Remember to meet with your CICO person every
morning and afternoon.
Aim for your goal every day. I know we might not
meet it every day, but try not to let one class ruin
your day!
This is NOT a punishment, but rather a time to talk
and share ideas with a trusted adult. Use the time
wisely!
Find what motivates youit is the key to success!
Each students goal is different, but our common
goal is to have S.M.A.R.T behavior daily.

Once a student is identified, staff looks at

determining who the CICO adult is
Meet with student

Explain Expectations
Discuss Concerns
Administer Forced Choice Inventory

Personalize

plan via student input

Allow time to adjust ie: forget card, no

signatures, etc.

Students total and write scores

Review daily and weekly progress
Each student works towards different
goals
Reward frequency is individualized
Some need daily (smarties)
Some need weekly (larger items, free

time)

Create healthy competition and accountability

among peers
Teams are created using similar data points
Teams compete against each other for weekly
rewards
Every Friday, all teams receive 15 minutes of
progress reporting, skills training, tips to
succeed, etc. as well as smarties
The winning team gets agreed upon rewardgym time, computer lab time, special seating
at lunch
