Reading/Writing Lesson Plans

READING LESSON PLAN

Rationale: Students will understand point of view and how it relates to setting/plot
Standards:
RL.7.3. Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes
the characters or plot).
RL.7.6. Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters
or narrators in a text
http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_ELA%20Standards.pdf
Objective:
Students will:
1. Demonstrate an understanding that the point of view is determined by the author.
2. Demonstrate an understanding that different points of view exist.
3. Demonstrate an understanding that people have different points of view about a topic.
Procedures: (after reading chapter 1 and 2 of The Graveyard Book)
1. Do Now: Students will have 5 minutes to reflect on the question presented and respond to it in
their notebooks: How do you feel about Snow?
- Discussion: ask students to break into their Think Pair Share group and discuss what
they wrote down in their notebooks (5-10 minutes)
- Rejoin as a class and allow students to share what they learned for their discussion.
(Guided Questions: did you find differences or similarities between the other students in
your group? Were you surprised that other students had another opinion than you did?
How did this make you feel, did you accept it?) [Write down on board the differences and
similarities]
2. Introduce the term Point of View (use a PowerPoint)
-Point of View: 1. a position from which someone or something is observed 2. a mental
viewpoint or attitude 3. the mental position from which a story is observed or narrated
- Different types of Point of Views with examples:

First Person- I (I love snow because I get to use my snowboard!)

Second Person- You (You seem like you dont really like when it snows
because the heater in your house is broken and your freezing cold.)

Allen 2

Third Person- Name/ he/ she/they /it (Ms. Allen enjoys when it snows
because she gets to bundle up around the fire and drink hot coco with her
family.)

Using the 3 examples above, tell me what is different about them, (where the sentences
all the same, or did they have different opinions?)
Other point of views on Snow: In Alaska snow is a lifestyle (Show a picture), In Florida
snow never exists. How do you think they feel about it?
What is the point of view that is being used in The Graveyard Book so far?
-First Person (when Bod is just speaking and when Scarlett is just speaking. They are
either speaking directly to the each other or to the reader)

3. Connection: Since Bod and Scarlett have different lifestyles, what is their point of
view on the graveyard?
- Use 15-20 minutes to create a Venn diagram with your Think Pair Share group
showing the differences and similarities between Bod and Scarlett (hang up example
of Venn diagram)
- Bods Point of View
-his home, where he was raised
-normal to not have a birthday
-his guardians live on the graveyard
- Scarletts Point of View
-dark, scary
-unusual that Bod doesnt have a birthday
-parents dont really like her roaming the graveyard
-thinks that Bod is just an imaginary friend
-Similarities
- Parents
-adventurous
-reading and sharing stories
-real people (not imaginary)
-

How does their point of view affect the way they see each other?
For example: Why didnt Scarlett understand why Bod doesnt have a birthday?
Or why didnt Bod know what a birthday day is? (It is because of the way they
were raised so they have a different perspective on things.)Bring in the difference
with their Snow examples

How does it benefit them?

(They are able to learn new things about each others worlds. Such as tombs,
inhabitants of the grave, mausoleum, cars and buses, television, airplanes)

4. Reflection/Closing Discussion Students join together and sit in a circle and discuss
the following questions as a class (using a talking stick):
-How would you react to Bod?
-Would you be scared like Scarlett was in the beginning?
-Or would you think it is normal like Bod?
-Based off of what we know about Bod so far do you think Bod is a real boy or just an imaginary
friend?
-What are some benefits to having different point of views?

Materials:

The Graveyard Book

Chalkboard/Smartboard/White Board
PowerPoint
Venn diagram
Poster Paper and Markers

Assessments: Think Pair Share, Venn Diagram, Group Discussion, Writing in Notebooks,
Talking Stick
Differentiation: If needed more examples of Point of View will be provided. Also if needed, I
will provide a list of options that the students can choose from to put in their Venn Diagram.
Technology Connection: the usage of the Google Maps to show examples of snow in different
countries and students are encouraged to write on our class blog about the reading
Future Connections: Students will be able to make better connections with the character in the
book and other stories involving point of view. The Venn Diagrams will be hung up around the
classroom so they can also use them as a reference.

WRITING LESSON PLAN

Rationale: Students will understand informative/ explanatory texts using Cause and Effect
Standards:
W.7.1. Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
a. Introduce claim(s), acknowledge alternate or opposing claims, and organize the
reasons and evidence logically.
b. Support claim(s) with logical reasoning and relevant evidence, using accurate,
credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text.
c. Use words, phrases, and clauses to create cohesion and clarify the relationships
among claim(s), reasons, and evidence.
d. Establish and maintain a formal style.
e. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the
argument presented.
W.7.2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas,
concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
a. Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas,
concepts, and information, using strategies such as definition, classification,
comparison/contrast, and cause/ effect; include formatting (e.g., headings),
graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding
comprehension.
b. Develop the topic with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations,
or other information and examples.
c. Use appropriate transitions to create cohesion and clarify the relationships
among ideas and concepts.
d. Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or
explain the topic.
e. Establish and maintain a formal style.
f. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the
information or explanation presented.
http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_ELA%20Standards.pdf

Objective: Students will be able to write and informative/explanatory text using cause and effect
explaining how Bod lifestyle effects the way he is in the book.
Procedures: (After reading The Graveyard Book)
1. Mini-lesson (Attention Grabber) Cause/Effect Demonstration

Allen 5

Begin with 3 mini demonstrations of cause and effect (have this set up before
lesson) Have students explain the cause/effect of the following three examples:
Popcorn: starts as a kernel, add heat, becomes popcorn
Eskimo Clothing Style: they dress in warm heavy clothing, they
live in a cold environment
Torn Picture: if I hold a picture and rip it in half, the picture now
has a tear in it and is ripped in half forever

Explain to the class the definition of Cause and Effect- A method of paragraph or
essay development in which a writer analyzes the reasons for--and/or the
consequences of--an action, event, or decision
(http://grammar.about.com/od/c/g/causeeffect.htm)

2. Connection Using Think Pair Share, discuss why cause and effect connect to The
Graveyard Book
- Allow students to discuss this for 5 minutes, then come back as a class and
discuss as a whole
- When they are done sharing their ideas, use their ideas so bring them on track and
explain or guide them to explain that since Bod lives on a grave yard his life style
is different than most children.

3. Writing Assignment Have the students write and informatory/ explanatory essay on
how cause and effect plays a role in Bods life, what is different and also what might be
the same comparing it to your life.
- (provide example: Since Bod was raised on a graveyard, Bod learned how to read
by using a flashlight and tracing the letters on the tomb stones. I learned how to
read and write by going to Ms. Cats class and learning my ABCs and writing the
letters down on paper.)

Materials:

The Graveyard Book

Popcorn/ popped and unpopped
A picture
Computer/ Projector

Assessments: Demonstration, Think Pair Share, Writing

Differentiation: If needed I will provide a handout with pictures and explantions of my
Cause/Effect Demonstration. Also instead of doing Think Pair Share we can discuss it as a class
to get a better understanding if students arent grasping what cause and effect is.

Allen 6

Technology Connection: In this lesson I will be using PowerPoint and the internet to help
explain different examples of cause and effect. Also students are encouraged to post on the class
blog page.
Future Connections: This lesson will continue on for a few days, I will allow time for students
to write and future lessons on proofreading and editing will be connected to this writing
assignment.
