Description of Activities and Setting

Teacher will introduce lesson and explain that this lesson is additional
practice for these students to master the objective and be on the same level
as the rest of their class. Instructor will begin by asking, What is theme?
Instructor will allow students to turn and talk to one another and then raise
their hands to share their responses. Teacher then explains that theme is a
general idea or lesson learned from a text that can be applied to other
situations and cannot be found stated in the text.
Instructor will clearly state objective to the small group and connect it to the
previous whole group lesson. We will be reading a passage together and
using the boxes and bullets method to determine the theme of the passage.
Discussion will occur at the end of completing the independent practice.
Students will repeat back what is expected of them.
Instructor will define the meaning of theme. Theme is a general statement,
not a sentence from the text, and can be applied to other situations in life.
Instructor will hand out the passage Casey at the Bat Students will take
turns reading paragraphs. Teacher will monitor pace and language as well as
distractions that are presented. When the passage is read, teacher and
students will cooperatively complete a boxes and bullets chart. The
students will be required to complete this chart by determining the theme of
the passage as well as three events that support the determined theme.

The learners will read the passage independently. Instructor will then give
learners the questionnaire that will require the students to determine the
theme of the passage and independently complete all 5 questions on that
sheet.
Learners will be assessed on their completion of the independent practice assignment.
5 out of 5 proves mastery of objective.
Teacher will gather answer sheets and then go over the questions with the
students if time permits. This is a reteach lesson that will be completed
during class time. The main area to cover will be that these select students
are now able to prove knowledge of theme.

Reflection on lesson: This lesson went over well as a reteach. There were 4 students that didnt prove mastery of the
same objective that was used in the whole class lesson. We had to do this small lesson out in the hall while the rest of
the class was independently reading. We were limited on time to complete this lesson and there were a few distractions
with people coming in and out of the door and taking bathroom trips. But the reteach overall went well even though
this lesson was not one of my choices but it helped out my teacher so I went along with it.
