RELATED COURSE OBJECTIVE(S):
1. Teacher candidates will be able to teach at least one of the art forms proficiently. Through lessons the
students will develop lessons and tackle problems as well as solve creative problems.
2. Teacher candidates will be able to make informed discussions based on research and examples from
different time periods and cultures using variety of methods.
3. Teacher candidates will be able to relate a variety of knowledge and understanding with cross
curricular disciplines.
4. Teacher candidates will demonstrate an awareness of the impact environment, culture (Indian
Education for All), linguistic, socio-economic (concentrated generational poverty), exceptionalities,
gender, and other factors have on learning.
5. Teacher-candidates will become familiar with the nature and influence of family, community, society,
and culture on children and how these topics may be integrated to enhance student development.
6. Teacher candidates will demonstrate an awareness of and ability to use technological advances to

IN THE SPACE BELOW, DESCRIBE THE ARTIFACT AND HOW IT RELATES TO THE
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF THE EDUCATION PROGRAM:
The artifact is an art lesson on making a paper memory quilt. The lesson focuses on the history of
quilting and how it has transformed from a necessity to a visual art. Each area of the Conceptual
Framework is addressed through the lesson. The lesson addresses diversity by allowing students to
create their own memory quilt with paper items which are important to them as determined by them. The
lesson hits on cultural diversity with a read aloud and through the historical aspect of quilting. Both
content knowledge and pedagogy are apparent in the lesson plan. The lesson plan is broken down into
steps containing information on content and how the content relates to the national standards. The
learning portion of the lesson plan is scripted and broken down step-by-step which shows the pedagogy
of teaching.

This was a cross-curricular lesson which incorporated language arts through a read aloud and discussion,
and social studies was also incorporated into the lesson through the history of quilting. The lesson
allows students to see how quilting began as a necessity and as resources became more available and the
culture of America changed quilting became a visual art form. Technology was incorporated into the
lesson through a website on the history of quilting in America and online pictures of quilting patterns
and samples. A website was also used to develop the grading rubric for the lesson plan. The lesson also
covers socio economic diversity through the read aloud and how quilting became an art for the wealthier
people who sewed for fun.
