Lesson Plan

Title:The Earlier, The Better!

Audience
The audience for our nutrition lesson is going to be 5th graders at the Christ the
King. The majority of the 5th graders are 10-11 years old. According to the USA
School Info, the demographics are 1.3% Indian, 11.9% Asian, 5% Hispanic, 9.1%
African American, 60.2% American, 0.6% Pacific Islander, and 6.3% two or more
ethnicities. There is a larger female population of 56.1% to males of 43.9%.
Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children in the past 30 years. In the
United States, the percentage of obese children between the ages of 6-11 years old
has increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. With the lack of nutritious
meals, the children are being exposed to more junk food.In addition, schools have
reduced or eliminated physical education or recess.
In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.
The major causes are a result of poor nutrition and lack of physical activity.
