Audience The audience for our nutrition lesson is going to be 5th graders at the Christ the King. The majority of the 5th graders are 10-11 years old. According to the USA School Info, the demographics are 1.3% Indian, 11.9% Asian, 5% Hispanic, 9.1% African American, 60.2% American, 0.6% Pacific Islander, and 6.3% two or more ethnicities. There is a larger female population of 56.1% to males of 43.9%. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children in the past 30 years. In the United States, the percentage of obese children between the ages of 6-11 years old has increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. With the lack of nutritious meals, the children are being exposed to more junk food.In addition, schools have reduced or eliminated physical education or recess.
