Unit 5: Energy Test Review Sheet

Students need to refer to their Science Binders (notes,

quizzes, graded papers, Warm-Ups, etc.) AND science
weebly website (http://cjhscience6.weebly.com) when
studying for the Test. ***Additional resources can be
found by accessing the online STEMSCOPES textbook.***

Definitions:
Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy
cannot be created or destroyed but it can
change from one form to another. Total amount
of all energy in system remains constant.
Kinetic Energy: Energy of motion, movement
of an object or particles (Swinging, running,
jumping, driving a car, throwing a football, and
kicking a soccer ball).
Potential Energy: Stored, to do work due to its
position (Apples on a tree, sitting, or a coiled
spring).
Mechanical Energy: Movement, energy of
matter because of its motion or position.
Radiant Energy: (Light) or Suns energy
carried by electromagnetic waves (Microwave,
light bulb, fire).
Sound Energy: (Mechanical) energy caused by
an objects vibrations.
Chemical Energy: Energy stored in matter
because of its chemical make-up (Cell phone,
iPod, anything battery operated,
photosynthesis-plants, or human digestion).
Thermal Energy: (Heat) energy related to the
temperature of a substance.

Electrical Energy: Energy produced by electric

charges; the flow of electrons.
Nuclear Energy: Energy produced when 2 or
more nuclei join together or when the nucleus of
an atom splits apart.

Understanding of Energy Transformations:
-During an energy transformation Energy
changes from one form to another.
-Three types of potential energy that we
discussed in class: Gravitational, Elastic, and
Chemical
-Music being played is an example of what kind
of Sound Energy
-A battery converts chemical energy into
electrical energy for human use.
- - A hair dryer transforms electrical energy to
Thermal and Sound
- - Moving close to a fire & feeling much warmer
is: Thermal Energy
-- The chemical energy in the sugars and starches
of food fuels all your body functions and
movements, and provides the thermal energy
that keeps your body temperature constant.

- When a battery is used to light the flashlight,

the energy transformations that occur are:
Chemical energy electrical energy
Radiant Thermal
- The seven different forms of energy:
Mechanical, Radiant (Light), Chemical,
Heat (Thermal), Electrical, Nuclear, and
Sound.
- A student conducts an investigation using
a hot plate and beaker of water. Which
transformation of energy causes the water
to increase in temperature? Electrical
to Thermal
- A real life example of a conversion from
chemical energy to thermal energy?
- What form of energy is released or absorbed in
MOST chemical reactions? Thermal Energy
