For my formal project I will be working with the University of North Texas Kristin Farmer
Autism Center. I will be working on creating them a volunteer handbook. I have been in contact
with the executive director of the center, Dr. Kevin Callahan. We spoke to see what it was that
they needed and he came up with needing a volunteer policy manual. That is what I will be
proposing for my formal project.
When I went to speak with Dr. Callahan the first time, he explained that they had many needs
and that he was actually in the process of condensing down their policies handbook. After I told
him how I would need to create a whole new manual or handbook he came up with the idea of
making a volunteer policy handbook. They have four types of volunteers that they allow at the
Kristin Farmer Autism Center. That includes volunteers, observations, field experience, and
internship or practicum. Each have different requirements and examples of what each are and
what they will be doing. What they are in need of is a handbook or manual that explains each of
their volunteer areas in full detail. This will help give a better understanding of what each area
needs and gives. Which will help bring in more volunteers. If it is unclear what a nonprofit needs
then it is hard for that nonprofit to get what it needs. This could also be a possibility of being
able to go on their website. There is not really a place for volunteer information on their website.
The only spot that I saw was for internships and practicums, but all that said was that if you were
interested to contact them for more information.
I will examine what each area of volunteers requires and preforms. I will then expand in detail so
that it well understood and that there is no confusion. I will stay in contact with Dr. Callahan and
I will be receiving more detail on what each area requires. He showed me their basic summary of
each, but neither of them went into great detail at all. That is where I will come in. I will be
making a handbook that shows the four types of volunteers that are available at the Kristin
Farmer Autism Center and explains what each of them require to become a volunteer and what
the volunteer will be doing.

I will be going up to speak with Dr. Callahan sometime this coming week to discuss the
volunteer processes in greater detail. Once I receive more information on that I will be able to
create the handbook. I should have the handbook completed by the end of next week.
In conclusion I will be making a handbook for the volunteer processes and policies for each of
the four types of volunteers. Each of the four will be expanded and shown in great detail on what
each requires and what will be completed.

Best Regards,

Drew Nichols
