    OBJECTIVES

    INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTION

    Definition
    Intramuscular injection is the injection
    of medicine into muscle tissue,
    to produce quick action in the
    patient as the medicine given by
    injection is rapidly absorbed

    Purpose
    Deliver drugs and vaccines
    Used when other method are not
    recommended.
    Relieve symptoms of illness.
    Promote and prevent from disease
    Introduce the drug in oil form for
    prolonged action

    Contraindication

    Impaired coagulation
    mechanism

    Edema

    After thrombolytic therapy

    SUMMARY

    Procedure
    Keep the item ready
    Check the doctors order
    Hand hygiene
    Explain the procedure
    Lie down patient comfortably
    Check the expiry date of the medicine

    Procedure
    Withdraw the medicine from ampoule
    Clean the chosen site with spirit swab
    Allow area to dry
    Hold the skin with non dominant hand
    Hold the syringe in dominant hand like
    pencil

    Insert the needle quickly at 90 degree


    angle
    Release the skin and support the lower
    end of syringe
    Aspirate for blood by pooling back on
    the plunger
    If no blood appear inject the
    medicine slowly
    Remove the needle quickly

    Massage /press the site with dry swab


    Discard the needle (uncapped)
    Assist the client to position comfortably
    Perform hand hygiene
    Record drug administration, dose, time,
    route
    Check the client response to medicine
    Assess the site.
