Structures of Life

Vocabulary
Investigation 1, Part 1: Seed Hunt
fruit- the structure of a flowering plant where the seeds are
located
seed- the part of the fruit that holds the young plant
estimate- predicting how much or how many without counting each
object in a group
property- something you can observe, like color, texture, or
smell
Investigation 1, Part 2: Seed Sprout
seeds- living things in a dormant or resting stage.
dormant- something that is inactive or resting.
mold- a slimy or cottonlike growth that develops on moist
things.
Investigation 1, Part 3: Seed Soak
embryo - the structure inside the seed that contains the tiny
leaves and root
seed coat - the layer covering the seed
cotyledon - the main part of the seed that stores the food for
the young plant
The Scientific Method
Manipulated Variable (MV): What can I change in my experiment?
How many trials should I use? (This number should be more than
2!)
Responding Variable (RV): What will I be waiting to see what
happens in my
experiment?
Controlled Variables: What stays the same in my experiment no
matter what?
Hypothesis: What do I think is going to happen? Must use
following sentence
format -- If (MV)________________ (result of MV), then (RV)
___________
(result of RV).
Testable Question: What is the overall question of my experiment
that I am trying
to find out? Must use following question format -- What is the
effect of (MV)

___________ on (RV) _____________?

Investigation 3, Part 1: Meet the Crayfish

structures - the observable parts of an organism
crustaceans - a class of mostly aquatic animals that have hard,
flexible shells,
jointed legs, and two pairs of antennae
antennae - the feelers on a crayfish
bristles - the short hairs on the crayfish that help them sense
things in their
environment
carapace - the main body shell of crustaceans
swimmerets - small, leglike structures under the tail
pincers - the big jointed leglike structures in the front of the
crayfish
Investigation 3, Part 2: Crayfish Habitat
elodea - a kind of aquatic plant that crayfish eat
habitat - where an animal lives
Investigation 3, Part 3: Crayfish Behavior
behaviors the actions of an animal; things that animals do
Vertebrates and Invertebrates
vertebrate an animal that DOES have a backbone
invertebrate an animal that does NOT have a backbone
Vertebrate Classifications
fish a class of animals that breathe with gills, live in the
water, and are cold
blooded
amphibians a class of animals that spend time on land and
water, and are cold
blooded

reptiles a class of animals that breathe air, lay eggs and are
cold blooded
birds a class of animals that have feathers, lay eggs, and are
warm blooded
mammals - a class of animals that make milk, have hair, and are
warm blooded
Animals Adapting to their Environment
adaptation a body part, body covering, or behavior that helps
an animal survive in
its environment
