Assessment Tools

The assessment tool of my preference is the ASQ: SE since its clear and friendly to
parents. I currently use the ASQ: SE and the ESI-P in the center I work for. We use the ASQ: SE
and the ESI-P within the fourthly five days of attendance. The ASQ: SE is focused on the childs
emotional development. The ASQ: SE helps the parent check their childs emotional
development. The ASQ: SE includes a set of questions asking the parents what things their child
can do and what things the child cant do. After the parents finished the ASQ: SE the answers are
scored to determine were the child stands. The answers will determine if a child needs to be
referred and evaluated from a development professional. The teachers will also, fill out the ESI-P
considering the following developmental areas visualmotor/ adaptive, language, cognition,
gross-motor skills and abilities. The teacher will use this screening to view were the child stands.
The ESI-P is guided with certain activities were the teacher observes or asks the child to do a
certain activity. The teacher is guided by a list of check points, fail or child refuses the activity.
At the end the cutoff scores are determine as refer, rescreen or ok. If the cutoff score is suggested
as a referral the child will be refer for his developmental delay. This assessment tools are easy to
use and well explanatory. This assessment tools are a combination of both an input from the
parent and the teacher. This assessment tools help gather information in case the child needs to
be referred based on his development results. As a teacher working in early childhood I have
gotten the opportunity to utilize both the ASQ: SE and the ESI-P. In my perspective I feel that
working with this assessment tools it has given me the opportunity to build a positive

relationship with the parents. I as a teacher sit down with the parent and discuss the results of the
assessments by providing feedback. I usually print out parent information to take home to help
their child. At the process of working together in the areas of their childs development parents
sometimes bring questions and concerns regarding their child. This information is useful because
we can share this information with professionals if the child has been referred. This is why I
believe this assessment tools are highly important because it helps early detection on the childs
developmental stages. Most important it helps both the teachers and parents build a strong
relationship.
