Dear Mrs. Wertz-Orbaugh:

For my genre remediation project, I chose to write an obituary for Vladek. I chose this
topic because I felt like I had some sort of understanding on the topic and after a little
research I was able to create an obituary that followed the guidelines and rules for that genre
remediation.
An obituary is a short notice of death typically published in a newspaper and contains
a brief biography of the deceased person. Some guidelines for this genre include explainin g
how and where the deceased died. An obituary also consists of a list of relatives that died
before and relatives that are still living after the deceased died. A short biography about the
deceased makes up the body of the obituary, usually highlighting life accomplishments and
good deeds of the person. An obituary usually ends by informing the reader of the funeral
arrangements for the deceased.
My project meets all of the requirements needed to be classified as an obituary, but
some of the aspects of this genre were challenging for me to write. This aspect was the short

biography of Vladek. I had a difficult time writing a short summary of Vladeks life and
telling about his personality and life accomplishments because I did not personally know him,
and usually obituaries are written by a loved one of the deceased. The constraints of this
project and genre helped me to create a final product by giving me strict guidelines to abide
by. Obituaries are almost always written in the same style and fashion and contain the same
type of information for each person, so it was not challenging to fit this criteria for Vladek.
As writer and composers we have to know that certain genres are meant for a certain
topics, such as an obituary. Obituaries are a specific style of writing meant only to portray a
notice of death, and they are only used to do that one job. Writing in a certain genre means
that you have to abide by the rules for this genre so that you can efficiently get your point
across. Different genres help readers to understand the topic and the message of the piece of
writing without difficulty. When you read a diary entry you expect to find an informal
personal piece of writing, not an interview between a questioner and an interviewee.
Overall, I found this project to be a learning experience because I have never written
an obituary before. I also found that it is very important to understand what a certain writing
genre is before you try to write using that genre. Each genre in writing has specific rules to
follow and these rules help both the authors and readers to better understand the piece of
writing.
Sincerely,
Hanna Weisner
